SMK = sekolah menengah kejuruan (vocational schools).
Thanks, Jaka. I've amended my post.
I really should have known this, and double-checked!

Ironically, this open information is intended to slash data manipulation that acutely happens in Depdiknas and educational offices of provinces and regencies.

If anyone needs this same info in Indonesian language to share with Indonesian friends (who don't want their children kidnapped or molested by paedophiles - thanks Depdiknas!) then I have made a post in Indonesian language with comments and links. Hope it's useful.

Um, its illegal in Canada because there's A LAW AGAINST IT
Yes, I agree that EVERY country needs privacy laws, but we shouldn't forget that this has happened because the Ministry suddenly has resources it didn't have even 12 months ago. It is only an issue now. It took Australia a decade to develop its federal privacy law, and even then there was a 1 year lead in period.
The more important issue here, I think, is the absence of effective dialogue between the Government and the electorate.

ok so they fucked up, they fixed it right? so stop going on and on like a broken radio.
all govts fuck up, just look at the US financial meltdown.
the important thing is realising the mistake and fixing it.
so stop your continuous bashing, you sound like the 5 year old schoolgirl you are trying to protect from internet savvy paedophiles and kidnappers

btw, we are talking about the jardiknas site right? the info is up there, but there is no mention of address, phone number, etc..
they should allow parents with valid numbers only to access the information on their particular site.

J...
This is a serious issue. I have checked the site and the DOB and addresses have been removed.
Postmaster...
Hardly a broken radio or record for that matter. This is a serious issue. Yes, governments make mistakes. No, they have not fixed it.
The data has been removed from the Department's website, but until they make a formal request to search engines to remove indexed and cached files then the problem is not fixed.
Brett has a point that a better stakeholder consultation mechanism is needed. However, the placing of this data online by all accounts was a clerical error. The data was supposed to have security features in place that restricted access to certain people with a need to know.
The bigger issue is privacy in general and the debate on privacy in Indonesia is one that is worth having. If this incident spurs that debate then so be it!

rob: its funny how westerners lecture about freedom of privacy etc...
they think their way works. from what we have seen in the past month regarding the economic meltdown, is that western ideologies DO NOT WORK, and will eventually collapse.
so take your so-called "developed", "enlightened" theories, wrap it up in a bullshit AAA rating, and go sell it to iceland! nobody in asia is buying your crap anymore.

I am not lecturing about privacy or economics or anything else as a matter of fact.
It is sad that you cannot see this from my comments. Perhaps if you took the horse blinkers off, took a breath, and then thought about it, then you would realize your hatred of all things "western" is truly wasted on me!
As usual arguments such as yours are light on substance and heavy on crude language as a poor attempt to mask your lack of sustainable argument.
To each their own.
My argument was that privacy is an issue. It is an issue that is worthy of greater debate within the Indonesian community. There are some ideas in privacy that would transcend eastern and western values and be somewhat universal.
How Indonesia deals with the issue of privacy is one for Indonesians to deal with in terms of legislation.
There is no valid reason that I can see that would prohibit westerners resident in Indonesia from participating in that discussion. We live here and as such have an interest.
But good luck in your endeavours of enlightening Indonesia (and Asia) to the evil ways of the west.

Of course you're right, Rob. I found loads of information about students at my son's school, although being a first year, his details hadn't been submitted to Diknas.
.............
And isn't it funny how westerners presume to 'lecture' those of us who've made a commitment to this country and exercise our right to speak.
No doubt Postmaster would deny the right to speak to all immigrants to 'his' country. His is the white supremecist outlook, not yours or mine.

rob,
as usual, its people like you that make an issue of something where there isnt any. less than 1% of the population probably gives a crap about this online listing, but thank god there are people like you, who love to stoke the flames and create "issues" to be discussed.
of course, you have to prove to people that you have to be here right. so why not create a fire where there isnt any, otherwise, why are you even here?
if not for your amazing, highly intelligent, western based insight and genius!
what would we do without you expats, my god, i shudder to think! so keep batting those baby blues and work it.

Postmaster...
An issue where there isn't any? I guess that is a matter of opinion. However, what I can tell from your posts to date that your main problem is with my western birth and upbringing.
I am not trying to prove that I have a right to be here. Even if I was to answer why I was here it would never be enough for you. So, why waste my time and yours with a reply :D
Mate, you seem to be the fella that has it all worked out so perhaps it is you that is the genius with the Eastern-based insights to solve teh world's problems.
As I said, keep trying to enlighten Indonesia and Asia of the evils of western society and culture because I am sure that it is more than 1% who give a crap.

rob,
if i have offended you, i apologize.
looking back, it seems my anger was midirected.
it's clear that it's jakartass who is acting like a pushy salesman from the west. insulting the officials as diknas, and screaming murder, cause he feels his values should be the defacto indonesian position on such "issues"
however, he is probably not an Indonesian citizen, thus has no rights when it comes to deciding legislation. nonetheless he feels it is his mission to educate the average indonesian bumpkin on his rights.
crusader indeed.

Not offended! Needs to be a little more than what has transpired here to get me worked up enough!
I have been living here in Jakarta for the better part of 15 years now so if I was going to be offended I think that my Indonesian family and friends, colleagues, and acquaintances would have taken care of that already.
