Gravatar I came across this blog while researching the proposal for denying birthright citizenship, and I would like to add a few comments to your words.
I am an immigrant (Mexico). However, I entered this country legally, and with the intention of assimilating the culture.
As opposed to many of my co-nationals, I agree with you that illegal immigration is wrong and must not be condoned or encouraged.
I also agree with you that people who come to this country MUST learn the language and become part of the culture, instead of trying to impose themselves and their culture on everyone else.
While denying birthright citizenship seems a little harsh to me, I would argue for a tightening of immigration laws. The law should prevent this child from petitioning his/her parents for legal residence if the parents were undocumented when they gave birth, and especially if they have lived illegally in the country since the birth.
I waited patiently for my permanent residence for almost 3 years, and so should everyone else. It is a matter of doing things right.

Gravatar Thanks Diana!

Gravatar I must have missed this gem this morning. I think the law does need changing. Just because someone gets across the border and pops out a baby, should not give them the right to citizenship for the baby or parents. This needs to be changed.

Our hospitals are closing and doctor's offices going under, in towns along the border because they cannot afford to stay in business any longer.

Thanks for the information.

Gravatar I know this is an old post, but I have not given up on the idea and I am doing what I can to fix this problem that has gone on for far too long.
