It's a good thing you label the idiots as such, because otherwise I'd have to judge them on their positions. Thanks for saving me the work.

Very well said... It is refreshing, in the midst of the blind loyalty that some in the Blogosphere, and elsewhere, are demonstrating, to still see entries like this. Keep it up.

Gravatar I think your criticism of Mehlman is a little bit of a "knee-jerk" reaction to his actual message. Mehlman is right that an "anti-immigration" stance like some are taking on the right and left is dangerous given past history and the strong role that immigration has played in the development of this nation.

While I'll CERTAINLY oppose any flexibility on illegal aliens and illegal immigration, a robust, fair and inviting immigration policy must continue to be a cornerstone of the American melting pot.

Remember that an "anti-immigration" stance is against all immigration, and conveniently leaves out illegal aliens who come to work, repatriate the cash and then go back home (which happens ALOT).

Strong border control is needed, as is a firm committment to tracking down, arresting and removing illegals, but when you cross the line and begin to take up the larger "anti-immigration" banner as some are beginning to do, you risk running afoul of some of the nation's greatest traditions and close off a inflow of ideas cultures and traditions which when added to the American melting pot produce our unique mixed American "heritage".

I think you're on target with your feelings, but off target with your opinion of what Mehlman was talking about. He was talking about the BIG PICTURE of immigration and I fear you merely wanted to focus on illegal immigration.
