Jake, great piece. Not a post, but a piece. You definitely gave me food for thought, because even though I agree these people are committing a crime (as you can figure), I've also never pondered the question "when is enough enough" when it comes to legal immigration.

There's a reason I left Illinois after graduating from college. Everytime I go back to the Chicago area, I'm appalled at what I see. My parents were legal immigrants who came here over 45 years ago and are naturalized U.S. citizens. My father fought in the Korean War. My parents taught us to respect the laws of this nation and we expect everyone else to do the same. I'm disgusted by seeing hordes of illegal immigrants brazenly displaying their complete contempt for our nation's laws and then making unjustified demands upon our government and our taxpayers. This is insanity. If you want to stop this insanity - get on www.numbersusa.com and contact every single one of the 18 senators on the Senate Judiciary Committee this coming week - our loud voices must be heard, we are citizens. NO AMNESTY/NO GUESTWORKERS, SECURE OUR BORDERS, BUILD THE FENCE, ENFORCE THE LAW. PERIOD. IF these are accomplished, they will go home.

It's good to see people like that woman. On so many anti-immigrant websites they'll report about an immigrant committing a crime and show a picture of a laborer giving the finger. But you never see a picture of an immigrant hugging a child or hear about how immigrant churches are growing like wildfire.
I'd return to the US to see Screwy Louie Gutierrez and GWB hanging side-by-side on the scaffold. It would mean that America had returned from the dead;but once you kill a country resurrection is unlikely. And yes, a country is different from a military-economic empire run for the benefit of transnational corporations.

I have no beef with any ethnic group, period. The folks we met and talked to at the rally were very nice people.
I do have a beef with ilegal immigration though, and it's not ameliorated a whit by how nice the person may or may not be.
I'm a U.S. citizen, a Latina, my parents came here legally, I'm an attorney, I'm bilingual, I respect the laws of this country, I oppose illegal immigration, amnesty/guestworker programs, and any publicly funded benefits for illegal aliens including but not limited to mortgages, in-state tuition, medicaid, public education, driver's licenses, etc. Earn the benefits, learn English, go home, apply for a visa, go to school, learn a trade or profession, then you're welcome to come here and scream and demand all you want as long as you are LEGALLY here. It is not racist to expect everyone to abide by the laws of any nation's immigration policies. It is not racist to oppose any policies that allow certain lawbreakers to be exempt from prosecution for their illicit status and activities.
