I think the assumption about the children of immigrants adopting the host society used to be true - look at all the 2nd and 3rd and 4th generations that have done so. In a lot of cases, about the only thing that hints at an immigrant background (as opposed to your anglo/irish settler ancestry) is the name.
Unfortunately, there is no reason for the 2nd generation to integrate with the host because of all the tools available to ensure that they cling to their parents' culture above all else.
