The "visitors" obviously came without calling ahead, and sometimes there just isn't always time to get properly dressed when "guests show up"....and the guy behind him in the first pic is also without K-pot or vest.
For that matter, until WW1, helmets were virtually unknown on ANY battlefield since the Dark Ages.
Hell, he has his weapon.
...and when the shit starts flyin' unannounced, anything more that is merely "nice to have".
Indeed TS, just read an update on it, that's exactly what's happened. Thank God he wasn't hit, the marine is expecting his first child.
