Gravatar Southern Indians, or Northern Indians? Are these the quiet kind, or the loud screaming in your face don't care about other people kind?

Gravatar John- if you think just thinking about McCain v Obama in the November election is depressing, you should try being a conservative American voter [me] coming to grips with actually having to cast a ballot!

Sitting out this election is not an option for me,as I see voting as my duty & not just my privilege. Others have said they will "boycott" the election to punish the GOP for failing to nominate a truly conservative candidate. I believe they are dead wrong to do this, for it is America who will suffer far more than the GOP if Obama wins the Presidency.

Gravatar Yeh, its' funny, many of the Republican pundits and candidates hold up Reagan as the conservative benchmark, but really Reagan wasn't any more conservative than the current crop (and he botched his high court nominations). Of course that just shows how much progress there has been for the conservative arm of the Republican party, because Reagan was a genuine break from the Nixon/Ford mindset which used to dominate the party.

Really, any of the Republican candidates (except Huck) would be similar to Reagan (with differences in emphasis). The main thing is which one can beat the Democrats. Guilliani would be my bet. McCain will get the "too old" treatment from the media (every photo will be a close up).

Gravatar You can break the mould, JR!

Thomas Sowell (who is 75) still rides his push bike around, and he remarked how as a kid he used to ride around the neighbourhood and see the old men sitting on the porches in their rocking chairs, the blankets over the knees. And as he was riding around he thought to himself "I'm the same age now as were these old men of my childhood". Modern medicine makes a big difference.

Gravatar McCain is still a long way from the nomination. But contrary to to Brett's analysis, McCain is not similar to Reagan and is no conservative. He would certainly be a disaster for conservatives if elected. The biggest problem would be the judges he might appoint to the Supreme Court.

McCain would certainly appoint liberal activist judges and not ones that would adhere to the language of the constitution. The reason I say this is that he would have to just to get judges who would uphold the legislation he authored. For example, McCain-Feingold put unheard of restrictions on political speach. Only liberal activist judges could be expected to agree with McCain on these issues.

Gravatar Eugene, if the appointment of Supreme Court judges is the criterion, then Reagan was an unmitigated disaster. McCain could hardly do worse, not that he will get the chance.

But Guiliani could win, and he would be excellent in that respect and in many others.

Gravatar Giuliani & Edwards are dropping out of the race.
