It would have been helpful if Der Spiegel had asked Ms Richardson about these comments made earlier this year.
What is important to remember is that terrorism is a tactic, and, as such, Richardson asserted, "It makes no more sense to declare war on the tactic of terrorism than it does to declare war on any other tactic." She predicted that from the perspective of history, "the War on Terror will be seen as a colossal mistake."
"There's something about America that lends itself to exaggeration for the purpose of unification," Richardson offered. "I think it's undeniable that terrorism has replaced communism as a sort of bogeyman, that it's being used as a political football to engender fear."

This is laughable! Open back channels to Osama to talk about what, exactly? He would come to the table demanding our cultural extinction as the starting point. How do you negotiate with that? Shall we offer up the banning of cheerleaders to start?
All facetiousness aside, the leftists *want* to negotiate. Die-hard intellectual liberals *want* to start offering concessions, and I know what they would offer first. Freedom of speech anyone? They stand to gain as much from the abolishment of the first amendment as the islamists do.
The fact that none of these liberals can offer up any diplomatic triumph in the last 50 years as evidence of its effectiveness is beside the point. We must not make the mistake of assuming that they want the same thing we do, a strong and free west.
