LOL! Essentially, Sobell's defense is as follows:
"We tried like hell to betray our country by giving the Russkis atomic secrets, including the A-Bomb design, but in the end our info was sketchy and not very useful.
THEREFORE we weren't really spies."
LOL!!!
This guy is lucky he wasn't fried with his traitorous pals years ago.
Please tell us where this 91-year-old lives, so we can kick him down a couple flights of stairs in his wheelchair.
An old traitor is still a traitor.

You know if this were an article about the prosecutor of these dirty traitors, then the NYT would publish the address, telephone, and social security number...

In the end we all have to face our demons and this jackass has come to realize that his demon is his own inability to recognize evil and joining with it.

a true believer when a rose-colored view of Russia idealized Communism as a welcome antidote to capitalism — which, after all, had failed many Americans during the Depression — and to anti-Semitism, which was prevalent even in cosmopolitan places
This helps a little, but only just a little, in helping to understand motivation. More so when I add it to being young and aggressively stupid.

I learned of this back in the late 80's or early 90's. There was a book entitled Inside the KGB written by Igor Gordevsky, something like that anyway. He was head of the KGB operation in London and actually he was a double agent and in it he wrote about the Rosenbergs and the spy ring they developed. He was amazed that even almost 50 years later, remember this is the late 80's, that people thought they were innocent.

Allen Weinstein who had the opportunity to cull KGB archives briefly when the wall first came down found records of payments to Julius Rosenberg and documented it in his book "The Haunted Wood".
Of course, he also found records of payments to Alger Hiss but the left still proclaims Hiss' innocence, too. Weinstein's book is probably the most important workon the subject of KGB spies in the US but because of the Left, it's been largely ignored in the decade since it's publishing.
Mostly he exposed Democrat State Dept. employees, Democrat Congressmen, Hollywood actors...no one that would surprise you.

"So, it turns out, were all those supporters who believed he was innocent."
Half of them wanted to believe the Rosenbergs were innocent, the other half knew they were guilty--but all were to some degree at least rooting for the other side.

Not so young. He would have been in his mid thrities in 1953. And sadly in 1953 people were more mature at that age.
