I'm not surprised one bit. (Fits my own observations traveling in Europe lately.) Obama is the New Class candidate par excellence, and the ENTIRE political establishment in Europe, left and right alike, is dominated by the New Class.

This on top of the traditional (over)awe of Germans for academic titles. (No sour grapes there: I benefit from it myself.)

Also, let's be brutally honest: the EU is neither an ally nor an enemy of the US, but a rival. Anybody that a rival wants you to appoint as CEO/elect as president is generally not going to be good for your company/country...
