I was watching her give a speech before a crowd of supporters the other day when it occurred to me that there's something about her I don't like. Not only is she part of the victim crowd, she's way too political for being the wife of a presidential candidate. While her husband does a good job of sounding non-dogmatic and almost non-political, she sounds like a hyper-partisan.
I would agree with her that the country has a lot of meanness, look at how we wage wars and lock up so many people for choosing tobacco

Michelle was born in the mid-1960s, yes? So since, say, the mid-1970s life in America has gotten much worse for folks, especially middle-class black folks? Yeah, there are some aspects of modern life that I don't love - it seems that you can succeed, but the pace is becoming so hectic that you rarely have time to enjoy the fruits of yoru labors - but I don't put that on GWB or even WJC - fact is we are competing in a global economy, and places like China, Korea and India (among others) are full of smart, hungry people. Unless we want to hide behind the oceans and embrace Autarky (Juchi?) then we have to play on the big field, and they play rough. Sadly, the 1950s aren't coming back again - but then I doubt that Michelle really would want to live then either. She just seems like a somewhat-bright women who got a little too indoctrinated in marxism and class warfare and it stuck. Unfortunately, not a likely to be a very gracious First Lady - fortunately, not likely to be First Lady at all!
I think she should keep making these comments. If Obama gets the nomination, this is what will help evangelicals unite behind McCain and trounce his ass. Go Michelle!

I disagree with that. I am, but most of the people around me are doe-eyed Obama-supporters, hard-working nerds, and constantly fretting over things like Global Warming.
If more Americans were cynical and complacent, I think this country would be better off. What's so terrible about recognizing the good things that we have (complacency) and being suspicious of radicals who want to upend it all (cynicism)?
Those are good, conservative values.
And...as for getting sick in America, I have one anecdotal incident about medical care for the ever Eeyore-like Mrs. Obama. My mother was hospitalized in Memphis, Tennessee, many times for various health issues before she died at the ripe old age of 84. She got excellent care every time. She actually survived an Aortic Abdominal Aneurism (commonly called a "Triple A" in casual medical parlance), which is usually fatal, at age 76, and lived another 8 good years. Her medical caregivers were kind, caring, and of the highest caliber.
This kind of nutty negative demagogery just makes me sad. Michelle Obama is a malcontent of the highest degree.

John Ryan - well, despite not going to Harvard I was still able to land the BigLaw job - and I sure don't sit around bithing about how mean and sucky America is. I'm also pretty sure that while I could/can earn as much as Michelle practicing law, I could not get a $300k+ / year job doing "community outreach", since I don't have any spousal Senate connection to offer. Anyone looked for Obama earmarks to Michelle's employer lately?
About three years ago the company I worked for got tired of paying union wages, and moved out of state. Over-extended turned into broke-and lost (almost) everything. at 51 I found myself unemployed, without marketable job skills. Last year, my son & I went into business for ourselves, it is difficult, but we have already made almost as much this year as what we made last year. I don't see this country as mean, nobody is giving me handouts, and the only help I want is a government that will keep it's hands out of my pockets!Cynical, why yes I am, when I hear someone who lives on a million a year telling me how bad this country is, and how hard it is to get by here. This is a GREAT country, and I really don't want some out of touch liberal elitist destroying it.

Don't knock her, she's a roadmap out of the rut that most women find themselves in. She's got self esteem, love of her family, competence in her work. She made Barack pay dues, just to date her, and when it looked good to her, she had the men in her life check him out. Look what she got for her wisdom and effort. A move from a one bedroom house occupied by four people to a 1.6 million dollar house, two ivy league degrees, and a good chance at landing in the White House. And on top of all of that, she's happy!!!
