You gotta believe Charley has converted those three apartments into one, sprawling living space, so even if pressed, he ain't giving anything up. At best, he'd "agree" to having his rent bumped up a smidge as an act of contrition.

The Times can't figure out when Rangel managed to accrue all four of those apartments.
Don't expect Congress to look into the matter either.
But I suspect it might have been Hillary v. Obama behind this.
Rangel had come out in support of Obama over Hillary in Hillary's home state.
Don't think that Hillary isn't out for a pound of flesh for that.

Rangel isn't my Rep. (Maurice Hinchey is, which is just as bad!) but as a NY'er I have to say he has lived WAY too long. GET OUT!!

I didn't think Rangel could surprise me further with his self-serving get whatever I can mindset.
This then is no surprise at all...
How do people elect people like Rangel? I guess they accrete enough power to grant favors over the years so it is in the selfish interests of enough people to keep them in office.
A good reason for a part-time Congress (they are anyway, let's quit the charade) and term limits?

Don't forget about his $700+/month taxpayer funded lease on his phat ride; which he justifies because he says, "it's my rolling office."

Rangel is also doing quite well by taking advantage of his taxpayer supported Congressional car allowance. The Times also did an expose on that a while back. I wonder what he did to PO them? The car allowance story is at http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/0...ars.html?

It is getting to the point in congress where we the people should care more about good and honest representation, then we do about supporting a party.
Crooks, cheaters, sleeze-balls, and hypocrits should all be kicked out of congress, regardless of what party they are from.
I say, "Throw the bums out!"

Some of you NY'ers should call in to your federal law enforcement agencies. We had a real estate fiasco in CA with one of our congressman who's now in the pen for 10 years for bribes accepted in the form of real estate deals. I'm tired of these congress people being untouchable, doing nothing, and living better than you and me.

Rent stabilization and rent control are two different programs that do the same basic thing - limit the prices to below market rents. They operate slightly differently as well.
And Rangel has responded. Indignantly, I might add.
The gist of his response is how dare you question his housing situation. He's Charles Rangel!

When the voters in his district care more about the content of their representative's character than his skin color or party, Charley will go.
Until then, his constituents can live with the selfish pig they have elected time and time again.

To answer a rhetorical question:
How do people elect people like Rangel?
Because same-party challenges are VERY hard to pull off. The other-party candidate has very little chance in most districts and another same-party candidate is both severely disadvantaged by incumbency perks and lack of party support, which, I suppose, is one of the incumbency perks.

Looks like a tax fraud to me. Three of those units he is paying under market rents, the difference between those rents and market price rents is a form of income. Somehow I get the feeling he does not report the imputed income.
Now if W realy was the fascist the left claim him to be, the IRS would be all over Rangel. Perhaps as much as thirty years of tax evasion. Betwwen the amount owed plus interest and penalties Rangel would be looking at a substantial chunk of change.

One of his predecessors in that office gave rise to an immortal line.
Representative Adam Clayton Powell was once discovered to be touring the high spots of Europe, accompanied only by a young lady secretary. (Selflessly, on his trip he clearly had tasked himself with keeping up with a lot of correspondence.)
One of the NY papers sent a reporter up to Harlem to get some comments from the man in the street. Picking out one such, the reporter asked what the resident thought of Powell's canoodling. Replied the gentleman, "Man, that cat knows how to live!"

Didn't the Constitution originally call for one representative for every X citizens, envisioning that the number of representatives would keep increasing with the population, before representation was changed so that the size of the House was fixed at 435? Restore the original representation formula, and even if you do get a character like Charlie Rangel elected, his proportionate effect in a much enlarged House would be greatly diminished. And probably countered with a greater number of representatives that actually do represent their districts.
