Ick! I'm sorry to hear about your kid illness woes. We were lucky enough to miss that with Lydia (plenty of other bugs for her, though.) and we'll have to wait and see if Zeke avoids it.

I've heard Pediacare has a drink for rehydrating little ones. Supposedly it's got less sugar and junk in it, but has some good electrolytes -- but we've never used it.

Hope your little one #2 gets over it quickly and safely!

The problem with Pediacare is that the kids just won't drink it (ever taste the stuff? I don't blame them). I mean, in this case, Evan wouldn't drink ANYTHING but milk. Not even popsicles! So, it's all about finding what they will drink to keep them semi-hydrated until the virus is worked out.

We have friends who had to take their children into the hospital to have IV's put in when the dehydration got so bad. That's definitely something that I would want to avoid if at all possible.

Ahhh. I didn't realize you'd given Pediacare a shot already. I certainly wasn't criticizing about Gatoraide -- you do whats you gots to do to keep the kids away from IVs. (Which my daughter would have only if we literally strapped her immobile to a bed/gurney. Annual shots with her are NO fun.)

We just dealt with the same bug with our twin grandchilden http://www.okuley.com/Twins/index.html

Fortunatly for us, they both got it at the same time. Our experience was that once they got over it, they were back to their normal spirits right away.

Thanks. Interesting article and some sound advice. Our two and a half year old is going thru the recovery stages right now and this disease sure is scary.

Some of what we learnt … hope it helps others
1. Gatorade works. The different flavors encourage children to drink it (Mango and Orange worked for us) Pedialyte is the most recommended but smells too strong – even though it comes in flavors. We even tried the unflavored version. Same strong smell.
2. For those in India who do not have access to Gatorade brand there are other solutions - e.g. Oral re-hydration (ORS) solution is very simple to prepare at home – try the UNESCO site http://portal.unesco.org/ educati...RS+Solution.doc
3. There is a simple medicine to stop the nausea. In the US it is brand name Emetrol. You will find cheaper generics too. Ask your Dr. for details. Once the nausea feeling is controlled, children drink most of their favorite drinks – of course the caveats still apply about the type of drinks recommended. Milk for instance.
4. Although you state that Milk causes temp Lactose intolerance there is some research that states there are beneficial effects of Milk in that it can actually counter the rotavirus attack. See http://content.nejm.org/cgi/cont...ract/312/10/ 605
5. Even when he was vomitting, we found that our son could keep down flavoured yogurt. In fact the Indian home remedy in such cases usually is boiled rice mixed with plain yogurt.

- Ok - Clarification about the Milk advice. Forget the research about beneficial effects. You make you kid drink Milk when suffering from this virus and she/he will blow up! DO NOT give Milk under any circumstances. We tried to give our son some when we thought he was recovering... he vomitted within a few minutes.
