Hitting is a tough phase to get out of. Boo did it too for awhile. It's usually gets easier when they acquire more language so they can articulate feelings. Some kids just like getting a reaction. My unsolicited advice. Lay down the law. Now. Be firm and consistent. Trust me, he'll be aiming below the belt before you know it.

Oh dear, I went through this with Jordan. He almost got expelled from Nursery for hitting others. Luckily between us we managed to get him out of it. Star chart tactics.
Send him to me and the zen master will teach grasshopper not to hit.
Oh, man. I feel you. He'll probably grow right out of it. It happens at this age.
Now, if it comes back at three... well, I still feel you.
I will recommend the book, "123 Magic". It really IS magic and a fast read to boot!
For now, all you can really do is catch him in the act and redirect his actions to something else so he knows it's not what he should do but ALSO there's another way to do it. I am all for martial arts training - but at a much older age (6 or 7). I've been doing it for more than 15 years but have been resisting starting Fury in it until he is mature enough to understand and internalize the honor/sportsmanship ethic behind it all. Because without it, you get a kid who can hit people (and that's it). Not fun. Hey, thanks for the birthday wishes man!
Wait until the wrestling stage starts.. ugh..
I will say that my son still goes through this hitting phase. He ends up in punishment if he does apologize (it is mostly his little brother that he hits).
Just keep reminding him to only hit when hit first and to of course protect his new little brother or furture girlfriend..
