What, no Rudy?
I loved Bull Durham, in part because I saw it a couple of years after I left Durham, and it was wonderfully reminiscent.

"Anything flying that fast oughta have a goddamn stewardess on it."
I'm a sucker for Ron Shelton's dialogue, so Bull Durham and White Men Can't Jump are some of my favorite movies of all time. (Tin Cup ain't half bad, either.)
Man, what is it with The Natural? Blasphemy of blasphemies, I nearly fell asleep during it...

About The Natural, maybe it's because I'm a dad, and a fairly new one to boot back in '84 when I first saw it...or maybe I'm just getting soft in my old age. Who knows. Plus, Wilford Brimley cracks me up in that flick- "You know, I shoulda been a farmer". And Kim Basinger is h-o-t. I know that people who love the book despise it because Redford made 'em mess with the ending, but it has a great cast, some nice dramatic moments, and it just really resonated with me. I can understand why some wouldn't like it, but I ain't one of 'em.
Johanna: I haven't seen Rudy, so I couldn't comment. It's on ESPN's list, though, and the radio guys talk about it constantly. I figure I'll catch it one of these days. I liked Durham, but other than a scene or two I just don't flash back on it much.
And I agree, Shelton is a good screenwriter.

Well, you're certainly not alone in The Natural or anything. Everyone in the world loves it. I think I just wasn't in the right mood when I saw it.. yeah, that's the ticket.

What about Mean Machine? The Hustler? Rocky?

Tom: It's a list of sports movies in the last 25 years, so Rocky and The Hustler don't qualify. I'm not sure about Mean Machine, which I haven't seen (I'm a poet and don't know it) and don't know its release date.
Slap Shot and The Longest Yard don't qualify, either!

Rudy is a never-fail-to-cry guy movie. Completely tear-jerking. I'd be interested in what you thought of it.
