Great review!
I still need to finish reading that book, myself.
Especially if I plan on getting volume 2 this weekend.

I was always more of a fan of Ditko's Dr. Strange stories than I was of his Spider-man's (or, at least more so than issues of Sp-Man post #20 or so). Ditko expressed much more freedom in his style and was a compliment to what I consider his best time (1957-60 Charlton sf & Cap.Atom tales). Lee's dialogue? I ate it up just like everyone else back then. I have that Essential as well and the stories do indeed hold up for their 40 years; better than 75% of today's servings.

Dr. Strange must have been the first psychedelic superhero, and I always thought it was ironic that he was paired with Nick Fury.

He was one of the first, anyway, and you're right- those two features couldn't have been any more different. Guess it was the contrast that made it appealing...
