I just recently read Bluesman 1 and 2 and loved them, but had the same problem you did with the art. Oddly, Stagger Lee has the same problem. I think I'll be reviewing all three later this month.
As for Simone, I finally tried her out via Killer Princesses a few months back and hated it, but had seen so much praise for Birds of Prey and Villains United that I decided to check out her JLA: Classified arc. Same problem there: "efficient but uninspired." I'd lost all interest by the fourth issue but finished it out for the rare dose of José Luis García-López art.
I suppose that to me, Simone's work is like Brian Vaughan's- something gets people worked up about it, but I'll be damned if I can see what it is.
Hated the McDonald's analogy, by the way, but it's all I could think of...
