Gravatar And ADD linked to it, so it WORKED! Congrats. It's always nice when recycling works.

Gravatar Squeaky wheel, have some grease!

Gravatar I found your worth-linking-to reminiscing through ADD. Man, it brought back a lot of memories. Not of those stores, but their analogs in Michigan. Zack's Drugs had the big wall rack in the 60s, and The Eye of Agamotto was the area's first comics specialty shop in the 70s. Thanks!

Gravatar RE "...one grocer, whose older-than-me son had a mind-blowing collection of every Marvel comic published up to 1969 or so. I have totally forgotten who this guy was, or where this was or anything that would help me track him down to see if he still had them (and most importantly, would he want to sell them!!)...all I can remember is stack after stack of the most primo Lee/Kirby/Ditko/Colan stuff you can imagine, and about 30 minutes to look through them. I think perhaps his name was Doug something."

Dude, that was you?

It's too bad, though: Way back in the day, my then-girlfriend made me throw all of those great comics away. Curse that Marsheena! Whatever happened to her, I wonder...

Gravatar Johnny Bacardi, you should have told me how you felt back then! I thought of you when I scammed a bunch of great comics from a loser named Doug! I made him throw out his great collection, then I snuck back and took the whole batch home!

I still have them; they were the growing-up reading material for my daughter, who now looks just like I did as a teenager, and who is a rabid comics fan. She's a good kid, although I do worry--she has a thing for older men...

Gravatar Mom doesn't understand me, Mr. Barcardi. If only there was someone out there who did...someone older, wiser, who appreciates classic Kirby...

Gravatar (In an alternate world, the above really happened. Keep writing the great blog, Johnny B.)

Gravatar Ha! Ya almost had me there for a minute...but as far as I know, Doug and Sheena didn't know each other, and lived in different towns.

Gravatar I noticed you mentioned "Vintage Books", but what about thae later name of "Hard to Find Books"? That was about the time Comico was getting started. Anyway, since you "waxed nostalgic", I did the same over on "Elmo's Junction" tonight. Yes, we've had a long history, and a pleasant one, "Johnny"! Thanks for always being a friend! You've influenced many a new comic interest for me; in fact, lately I've been reading more Warren Ellis!

Gravatar Aw shucks, Dave! Same here, right back at'cha.

I haven't forgotten Hard to Find Books (where I got a shitload of Silver Age DCs- Atoms and Hawkman and Metal Men... but honestly, I had forgotten what it was called! I guess I didn't think of it when I wrote that three years ago, though. It didn't last very long, as I recall.
