Speak up!

Gravatar Wow… if the Catholic Church had even put HALF of the energy they’re putting into bashing some guy’s silly book and it's subsequent movie, towards the problem of priests raping little kids, I might care about what they have to say on this. Until then, to me, catholicism is just organized and sanctioned child molestation.

I’ll check back in with you guys when you get your priorities straight.

Good luck.

Gravatar Daniel, I just got through reading your identical comment over at JA.org. Are you suggesting that no catholic under any circumstances should have a dialog about anything except errant clergy until the situation is resolved to your satisfaction? Don't be silly.

I shuddered too at the recommendation to see 'over the hedge'. Adoration is a fabulous idea.

Gravatar Yeah, Over the Hedge looks just awful. I suspect I'll have plenty of better things to do (studying my theology texts, perhaps).

Gravatar I might care about what they have to say on this. . . . . I’ll check back in with you guys

Why can't folks just be honest with their hate? Why the need to mix lies with your Church-bashing? He knows, and we all know, that he will never care about what the Church says, and he will never check back.

I know that you will never read this, Daniel, but if you believe in something, be man enough to stand up for it honestly, don't cower and whimper that there is a chance that you might ever listen to the Church when you know that that is not true.

Gravatar Very true Bender.

Also, this guy is ignoring the fact that the Da Vinci Code is an affront to ALL Christians whether Protestant or Catholic. However, what does that matter when a chance to bash the Church comes along? Way to love your neighbor and work toward the unity that Jesus wanted so much that he prayed for it right before he was arrested.

Gravatar Wow… etc.

That's boring! You're boring everyone! Quit boring everyone!

Gravatar Meanwhile, I'm thinking that maybe they might make a movie of Bad Twin, by Gary Troup, who was lost when Oceanic Flight 815 crashed. Its about the wealthy Widmore family, whose company makes, among other things, pregnancy tests, and whose offices are just a few floors above those of the Hanso Foundation. I'm about half-way through, and its pretty good. I'm thinking that they could get the actors on Lost to play the characters.

Gravatar I think prayer would have more impact than an economic boycott. Adoration is the way to go!

Gravatar Julie,

A buycott is something I strongly push to my students. The only way to alter the ways of Hollywood is to funnel funds to those products which best represent our worldview. Would I suggest people patronize Over The Hedge? No. It appears to be yet another scataological kids movie that pushes the post modern agenda. Poseidon, depending on how it is done may be suitable - again, depending on its treatment. It comes out Friday the 12 and will still be in theatres.

The best thing all Christians, regardless of stripe, can do to regain a grip on the culture is to do two things. 1) Be mindful of the crap we digest and make certain what we consume is worthy of being viewed. 2) Support strongly material that is in agreement with our worldview. The support for Passion of The Christ, LOTR and Narnia did not go unnoticed. Smaller films need support as well. There is a growing Christian film market and if something like The Da Vinci Code gets you whipped up, put your funds into something else.

I know this comment is a tad rambling but I feel strongly about this subject - perhaps I should post something. The bottom line is this - boycotts tends not to work. Buycotts do. Pushing funds to producers of good entertainment makes it so they can make more and sends a message of how finacially powerful Christians can be. It is a positive action which creates instead of boybotting which tends to focus on the negative and makes us all look like a bunch of pushy, restricting jerks.

Gravatar Absolutely right, Julie. Even if I were able to get out and find a babysitter and go see a movie with my sweetie that weekend, there's no way I'd put hard-earned money into seeing Over the Hedge. C'mon, it's not like I've seen a movie in the theater since Wallace and Gromit (and that with a three-year-old)!

I think I'll go with the good book idea. When will someone make a movie out of The Man Who Was Thursday? Or Tim Powers's Declare?

Gravatar Nehring, I also was thinking of the "buycott" idea with, as you say, the right movies. Since we agree that "Over the Hedge" is terrible looking in its own way, what should we see that is out now instead?

My choice would be Flight 93 or, failing that, Inside Man or Brick. I can't think of (or remember) anything else that appeals to me that is out now. Anyone else have ideas?

Gravatar There is nothing out there. Personally, I'd like to see Poseiden but as a means of protest, it probably won't work. The idea of a buycott is protest, if you can't see something you'll like then move your cash to the lesser of two evils - that would be Over The Hedge since that will be the no 2 film the week Da Vinci is released. Its not about enjoying a movie, its about making voices heard through our captialist system. You don't have to sit through Over The Hedge, just go in an buy a ticket. Over The Hedge is not somthing I'd be wild about supporting but its the only option. If Christian filmmakers were smart they would schedule their releases for obvious situations such as this as a means of giving people somewhere to put their protest dollars.

Gravatar Thanks for the ideas. I think I'll go with Adoration...

Gravatar Wow, what a terrible bunch of movies are premiering that weekend. I guess the others were all afraid of Da Vinci.

You know, I like the buycott idea but really can't condone tossing money away on a terrible movie. In that case, I'd have to go with the boycott idea.

Gravatar Julie, help me out here, you were critical of it and somone else posted here regarding "Over the Hedge," that it "pushes the post modern agenda"?

Now of course this looks like a dopey kids movie and I would never see it, why the sudden criticism of "Over the Hedge".

Boycotting a movie I'm afraid does not do much, I haven't seen a movie in the theaters since Feburary and that hardly means I'm boycotting hollywood in a direct sense (though I suppose being a part of that males aged 18-30 or whatever demagraphic that Hollywood is losing out on bothers them.)

The way to really send a message about the Da Vinci Code is to help another movie beat it. If the DVC does not open at number one it will only be remembered as a huge flop. So in addtion to an hour of adoration it would be smart if we all saw a diffrent movie (Where is Mel Gibson when we need him!!!!??!?!?!)

With the Da Vinci Code though I worry it actually will pull in a religious audiance that hasn't been following things as closely as we Catholic bloggers. After The Passion, the Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, and the Exorcism of Emily Rose, american Christians are at long last getting used to movies comming out that don't attack them.

If I didn't follow anything about the Da Vinci Code and only saw the trailers, with the grand gothic cathedrals, painting of the Last Super, monks, crucifixies, the Vatican, and Gregorian chant in the backround I'd think it is another good movie for religious people to see.

Heck regardless of the plot and theme, asthetically atleast seeing all that great Catholic art and architecture on the big screen is a wonderful thing for those of us who have never been to Europe.

I do think though that the backlash from this film will be bad as us Catholics who are the "go to" people in our circles of friends for religious discusions get bombared with stupid questions raised by the movie, but the Lord does work in mysterious ways, heck I don't want to sound like Ron Howard here but maybe seeing this film, and talking about it with somone like you or I will actually bring some people back into the Church?

Still no silver lining makes up for the insults this film purveys. Maybe it is worth considering buying a ticket for another movie and then seeing the DaVinci Code instead, not unlike the way a 14 year old gets into a rated R film? Then one gets the visual treat (even if the plot is lackluster)and sticks it to them.

Gravatar So sitting through 90 minutes of a dreck movie in an air-conditioned theater is not your idea of a good time. No problem, you can still help. Go online and purchase tickets to "Over the Hedge" and then just don't go to the movie. Then, during the time you would be at the movie, go to adoration or say the rosary.

And the reason to buy them for "OTH" is that at least one movie needs to out-do "DVC", and "OTH" probably has the best chance since animated movies have historically done pretty well. And even if that can be argued, we've got to pick one and that's probably the least offensive of the bunch, and, it's already been spread around that that's the one to see. So, buy the tickets, don't go see it, pray the rosary/go to adoration. These are your marching orders. And if it doesn't work, well, at least you did the right thing.

Gravatar Here's an idea. Everyone wait a week and go see X3 en masse.

Now, THAT I can do.
