I've noticed that a lot of Catholics are humor impaired. I've always thought your sidebar was great.

It's too bad that you even had to write this post.

"An attempt to concentrate on more intellectual pursuits will ultimately fail this week, thanks to that shiny thing over there."
Or... Squirrel!
Keep up that sidebar. And I happen to know lots of Catholics who are definitely not humor impaired!
Okay, I'm related to most of them.

I grew up in a Lutheran family (Missori Synod--and if you analyze Lutherans you will find them to be even more of the "missing a funny bone"-kind than devote Catholics). Their uptightness actually drove me away from the church (but not faith in God). I have been visiting your website for quite a few years now...never leaving comments...but still coming back BECAUSE you have good humor. Not only are you steadfast to your faith, you also allow yourself to enjoy other parts of life (maybe because you are a convert??) And don't you think God meant for life on this earth to be enjoyed?
I don't know exactly what I am trying to say except that as far as your horoscope sidebar goes: no explaination should be needed! But thanks for posting those all...I don't find myself going to the Onion enough.

I don't know which is more amusing -- the horoscopes or the fact that people actually email you about them.

Laughter is nothing more than the vain howlings of a soul on its way to Hell, trying to drown out the noise of the demons (those natural cacklers). We are called to be dour. And smug.
Let us all sing that classic hymn:
They will know that we are Christians by our smug! When we frown at young children, when we wag fingers left and right! They will know we are Christians by our smug!

"How insensitive! Making fun of those who take horoscopes seriously! Why, what do you think you are? A serious Catholic or something?"
from a culturally sensitive, enlightened progressive Catholic.

I'd say it's something that falls in between: the possibility that the people who send the e-mails think those horoscopes are real!

Here's what I find more amazing and amusing. Most of the time the people would not take the chance on actually reading the horoscopes. As if merely casting their eyes over them would prove to contaminate them. Surely that is being a bit too discriminating and fearful?

On the serious side. If you take the time to read the book of Enoch you can search for it online. Do a google search it will come up. It explains Enoch learned everything about the heavens. Enoch being Noah's grandfather we all are Enochs decendants. Also it states the devil and his fallen comrades came to earth and breeded with humans teaching the opspring , monsters, giants, sorcerors and sorcerous's , gods , ect. He taught them dark evil things about earth and about the heavens. So being carefull there is a darkside to everything. "seek ye first the kingdom of heaven" .

I did not read the horoscope because I do not read them. I do not think they "contaminate" me by reading them. It is simply a part of the occult, so I ignore them. Surely, that is not amazing, amusing, too discritminating or too fearful. Perhaps, it is simply just prudence.

Except that this horoscope is actually mocking horoscopes ... so it is fighting the occult .... if you wanna go that way.
To make my point crystal clear for this particular post: surely one is not going to write and complain when they would not even read the horoscope to see what it said on my blog? Considering the quality of mockery that is usually contained in the quote directly above? In that instance, which is ALL that I am speaking about (NOT horoscopes in general ... oy veh) it is surely ridiculous. Period.
As for casting one's eyes over a regular style horoscope, I tend to view them all as simply silly. I also don't buy lottery tickets. So, it is partly one's mindset as well.

A Horoscope is an astrologer’s tool to predict the future of a person and analyze his physical and mental characteristics. It is built on the basis of time and date of birth of the person. It is quite well known that the time is not the same all over the world. While the sun is rising at the country where you live, it may be setting at another country in the world. When it is morning at your home, it is evening or night in another part of the world. This results in yet another difference in horoscopes of persons born at the same moment but in different parts of the world. It must also be understood that the sunrays affect different parts of the earth differently at various times of the day-- in the morning, at noon and at midnight.
The planet’s position and influence would be different in case of children born at a given time in opposite parts of the world. If a planet were positioned just above the birthplace of a child, its rays would affect the child with unimpeded force. In order to reach the other child born in an opposite part of the world, it would be essential for the rays of that planet to travel directly through the earth. Obviously a part of the force of the stellar rays would be spent by the time it reaches the second child. This explains why the planets under the earth exercise less influence on a life than those above the earth. It also explains that time and place of birth of a person are the basic factors in forming a horoscope. The more accurately we are able to take into account the time and place of birth of a person, the better we shall be able to describe the character of the person and predict his future.
When casting a Horoscope , it is very important that in noting the time of birth of a child, we should have a clock set as accurately as possible. It must be noted that the accurate time of birth for astrological purpose” is not the moment of delivery of the child, but the instant when the child gives its first cry, because that cry is the completion of its initial breath.”
