Nice, I was literally just reading about another English martyr St Edmund Campion and then clicked over here. The English Saints understood the the limits of the political. It's a timely reminder thanks Julie.

Gino and I are all about St. Thomas More. Catholic lawyer, loving father & husband, what's not to love?
Anyhow, thanks for the lead on this podcast.
God bless!

I have one serious question regarding the US elections, as an outsider (I am portuguese and never been to the US): given that both candidates are unacceptable from a Catholic point of view, how is it possible that there hasn't been any catholic stepping up to run for president? You know the candidates are Obama and McCain for months now. Are you that much enslaved by the system that you can no longer imagine a strong candidate that is neither republican nor democrat?
I think a decent maverick would have a fair chance at these elections.

Well, first of all American Catholics would have to agree enough to be able to elect a candidate. That is a tough one as a large number of American Catholics tend to treat their faith as a cultural identity, rather than as really practicing their faith. As "cafeteria Catholics" they just pick what they think is convenient and ignore the rest. That often applies specifically to the right to life issue.
I do imagine that a faithful Catholic candidate would also appeal to many other Americans. However, we will keep this just to the Catholic element.
Secondly, a Catholic candidate would have to be a "real" Catholic. As per the problem I mentioned above with American Catholics, we can see this with vice presidential candidate Joe Biden who is Catholic but who does not follow Church teachings in his political life.
We also have had mavericks with strong personalities who have entered the ring independently in the past ... and failed miserably. Most recently this would be Ross Perot and Ralph Nader in various elections.
At this point, I think that our system is too entrenched ... as well as the media who these days seem to pick a candidate and throw all their weight behind them.
Not sure if that answered your question, which is fairly complex. But that's the quick, comments-box answer.
