Gravatar (First Daughter) That is hysterical. And I truly love those lapels. But to me the burning question is, "What exactly is she modelling in that picture?"

During the funeral of Pope John Paul II and the election of Pope Benedict XVI, the burning question which the BBC asked every Catholic they interviewed was, "Will the new pope allow condom use in Africa?" It seems so obviously stupid. If people were really interested in what the Church has to say about sex, they wouldn't be contracting AIDs, so why would a change in teaching make a difference?

AMDG,

Gravatar >>"What exactly is she modelling in that picture?"

Socks, maybe?

Gravatar A brilliant surmise. You obviously are a man with the ability to draw profound conclusions from very little evidence.

AMDG,

Gravatar I saw that story about Madame Sarkozy's excommunication of the Church and really wanted to do a very snide blog post about it but didn't have time, which may be just as well.

It really took me a long time as a young man to grasp the fact--to internalize it, as they say--that a face like this didn't necessarily mean a matching soul. In fact the contrary may be more likely.

There is an amusing picture around, which I don't have a way of locating at the moment, which shows Mr & Mrs. S on stage with some other dignitaries, and he is plainly wearing elevator shoes.

Gravatar Somewhere -- maybe in *The Four Loves*? -- C. S. Lewis talks about the excitement of finding someone who is "beautiful and clever and sympathetic." That phrase has always stuck with me as the perfect synthesis of what anyone would want in a lover. And yet how disillusioningly rare is that precise combination.

Mme. Sarkozy, alas, may be only one for three....

Gravatar Hmmm. Well, we may all only be one for three.

AMDG,

Gravatar If that, in my case.
