No, I don't think so. The Apostles instituted deacons in order to "serve tables," i.e., help in the daily distribution of food. Deacons nowadays have a three-fold responsibility -- to the alter, to the preaching, and to minister to those in need.

I'd like to see priests and deacons out of parish management as much as possible so they can pick up the task of being spiritual shepherds.
