I never hyphen anybody - nor do I allow them to be hyphened in my presence. I have no tolerance or patience on the subject. You're either a yank or you're not. Period!
The only appellation of a prefix to the American named that I have ever accepted is Native American, which is properly not hyphenated because it is not attempting to describe a subset of another. (I note that Jenn was very astute and got that correct in her post.) It is meant to describe a set of peoples who preceded the creation of this nation and were native to this continent and is usually only used to describe ones descended from these groups, not as a term meant to separate or divide.
Also, the term Native does not denote a location but an original status. It would be like saying that I am a native Texan vs. someone who is an Oklahoma-Texan. See, even when you say that it sounds stupid.
Being one such descendant, I recognize and accept the term, but will only ever use it to describe my ancestry and not my self. I am an American. If that title is not good enough for you to frakking bad.

I take that back... I occasionally do use it to describe my self. When someone claims I am racist, I will pull my race card and tell them that I cannot be racist if you follow conventional wisdom.
