And underlying it all is this notion that somehow through politically correct BS, we can and will some day live in fantasy la la land where everybody lives unoffended all day everyday in a socialist utopian society.

There are four major aspects of this issue
1) Censorship (actively done by goverment or advocacy groups)
2) Self-censorship (encouraged by either of the above)
3) Self-regulation (or a lack thereof)
4) Over-sensitivity
Censorship is bad for the left or right. Everyone should be allowed to speak their peace. However, a little judgement on the specific words used is important. The left is focused on words being censored. I'm afraid that will translate into ideas being censored.
That leads me to Point #3. If we choose the right words to express a controversial idea, we make the same point and probably get a better response. Self-regulation isn't censorship, it's about using appropriate words to make a point. Why say nigger (which is intentionally derogatory) when negro, black man/woman, etc are perfectly acceptable.
Lastly, all these various enthic and social groups really must get over themselves. Whatever happened to "stick and stones, etc"? The use of negative words is done to draw a reaction. If you ignore the words, people will eventually stop using them.

I don't agree with censorship either, and I must admit that I listen to Howard Stern and I laugh hystericly.
By firing those people and causing that big uproar, those words are given a much greater power. A better strategy would have been to say "what a classless jackass, I'm not listening to him anymore", and proceeding to do that.
