I agree, standards for a pass are too low in schools nowadays...
For example, I'm required to give a child a passing grade if that child has an "E.S.L" or "E.S.D" designation beside their names, even if that child puts forth zero effort in terms of completing the work that's required.
I teach Grades 3 - 6, and I don't have a problem giving these kids at least their 50 % if they're working hard, getting help with the material, and participating. However, some of these kids (young as they are) seem to know how to work the system already... They know that they can't fail, so it demotivates them in terms of working hard... It's brutal...

That's true, and that's one of the big problems at our school (and at many of the schools in the area) - kids are not motivated to succeed, because they know they can't fail and they wont ever have to repeat a grade.
I look at some of the kids that I'm teaching now, and I'm truly frightened for their future if they aren't able to learn personal responsibility.
First, they need to learn how to spell it.

Kids need to fail, and need to have some goals to achieve. You can't learn by not failing some of the time.

This is a point I tried to make on my blog, The vast majority of AMERICANS are sleepwalking when it comes to electing officials.
This is a case and point, those folks could tell you what Obama Husseins voting record is, they couldn't name any "CHANGE" he participated in, they couldn't tell you anything about Obama's record, or plans OTHER than he's black, and he is going to give them something.
The uneducated voters in our nation elect the nominee, and have a large say in the general election.
He's not black, but he plays one on TV.
