What if his per square foot costs are lower than the average American home because he is able to operate his obviously larger home with more efficiency? It's not implausible to suggest that.
Comparing straight usage is silly because the homes aren't comparable. Of course, the people who drafted this press release as a "touche" obviously don't know much about analyzing real estate. That I know quite well.

Al Gore:
10,000 sf home.
18,400 kWh/month divided by 10,000 = 1.84 kWh/month/sf
Me: 1,100 sf home
408 kWh/month divided by 1,100 = 0.37 kWh/month/sf
1.84 kWh divided by 0.37 = 4.97
Al Gore's Nashville home uses 5 times the juice as my home per square foot.

I'll admit this is a tough one for me. Sure smells like a little hypocrisy - though I certainly won't pass judgement on what Sean Hannity or his mouthpieces on this site claim.
I feel Al Gore let a lot of people down after the 2000 election fiasco. He made some claims to keep a tab on GWB, but I hardly heard from him until this film. How much of that was his silence, or simply the MSM ignoring him - after all, he wasn't running for office anymore or already a President starting illegal wars or getting blowjobs from interns...

Yes, Billy, he's as 3 bucks as it gets.
WS....Well, I can't rightly say, and niether can a single one of us. Why? There are so many reasons.
1) None of us, to my knowledge, are scientists.(Many of whom disagree on this topic.)
2) The Earth is a old soul...she'll be here long after we have "wiped each other off the face" of her, and was here long before we were on it.
3) Do I think humanity is a scar on the planet? I certainly do. That San Diego does not require mandatory recycling disgusts me on so many levels I cannot count them.
4) Tempature fluctuations have occured as far as we know, through out time. In the 70's global cooling was the cause du jour.
5) If Al Gore gave a shit he'd go green... he doesn't, and he hasn't, and he won't. Going green requires some sacrifice.
6) Frankly, humans thinking they can have such a huge impact on Mother Earth seems slightly absurd and overly egotistical to me. Sure we've wreaked havoc on ecosystems and habitats worldwide. We've been solely responsible for the decimation and extinction of so many species, I can not keep count.
But....that is no different than what has happened in the past. We weren't around when the dinosaurs became extinct. Life lived through warming trends and ice ages.....life in some form will go on long after we are gone.
But, again.. I'm no scientist.

CO2 levels have risen 80 ppm in the last century. Whether that's sufficient to cause heat retention is up for debate. Solar heating is another factor. Volcanic activity also contributes massive amounts of water vapor and CO2.
It also seems extremely difficult to find any information that is objective and doesn't immediately blame a 80 pppm increase in CO2 for a minute temperature increase.
There's no question that we should be good stewards of the planet we live on, but we should also approach such matters logically and without the hysteria that's been on display lately.
There are many skeptics of global warming being a man made cause. All scientific voices should be heard. The recent attempts to silence critics only leads one to believe that other actions are in play.

Jenn, Darwin,
I really enjoy your openness and honesty. And I couldn't agree more about the waste and excess you mention. Actually (and I KNOW I'm going to be blasted for this because of how I've behaved here) I am a scientist. But I'm not a climatologist or earth scientist. I do know that the vast majority of those scientists do beleive humans are responsible for the trends in global warming. Yes, there are a few who disagree - and have a minority of scientists previously been proven correct - certainly. I think a lot of the disagreement comes from the predictions for the future - how bad and how soon things will change.
I agree so much with your points 2 and 3 its not worth picking around at any other. I just wish this was not the political issue it is.
Have a great week - if I don't get back before the weekend (although I probably will try - this is addicting...)

I'm old enought to remember what I think may have been the original 'green' commercial. It was one of a native American Indian witnessing trash being discarded out of a car window. He then turned toward the camera with a tear in his eye. The ad simply stated, if i recall correctly DON'T LITTER.
Since that time I have seen a marked difference along our highways from when I was a kid. The deposit law on bottles has also made a huge impact.
The water quality also continues to improve. Being on the Great Lakes and sailing 2500 miles each year, one can see the difference in the clarity of the water and the amount of visible debris.
I don't believe we are in the midst of a gloom and doom scenario. I think we have made tremendous advances over the last several decades in awareness and application of enviro friendly programs.
I have a hard time swallowing the global warming alarmist line. As I sarcastically eluded to in my first post on this thread, the polar cap on MARS is melting.
I agree, consumption should be intelligently managed through emerging technologies, recycling programs should be expanded, and alternative energy sources should be pursued.
Even if the US were to go 100% green tomorrow, the rest of the world would take decades to catch up. China is a huge contributor to pollution. Russia, Iran, much of Europe, South America, and the list goes on.
Al Gore may be given credit for making people aware, but he is guilty of perpetuating a lie for political reasons, as well as his own personal hypocrisy.
That's all I have to say about that

I suppose one can infer a bit of hypocrisy on our part by saying one doesn't have to serve in the Armed forces of the US to support the war, but in reality, thuose of who support the troops and their effort are not making movies and traveling the world telling you that you have to enlist regardless whether you believe in the cause or not. Essentially, that is what Al Gore is doing. he is telling us we don't have much of a choice and yet, he lives a life of extravagance. It us we who must give up the SUV and the energy usage. Gore reminds me of a few fundamentalist preachers I've known. Do as I say, not as I do. It is the inconvenient truth of his private jet trips and unbridled energy consumption that draws our ire when he is demanding that we all cut back.
No one here is saying the flower sellers and caterers don't deserve a living and that the parties and excesses of Hollywood shouldn't happen. Just don't turn around and tell the rest of us how to live.

"Yes - China and India are major problems. Suggestions on how I can do something about that?"
Yeah ... Pressure Gore the high priest of the religion of environmentalism to address it. It's ridiculous to continue to cite the US which has some of the most stringent emission controls in the world when the majority of the world has no emission control at all.
Many of the regulations you mentioned were altered so companies actually have a chance of meeting the goals. Some of those regulations dated back to the '70's and still hadn't been met.
Activism, any kind of activism these days is no longer a pursuit for progress or improvement. It's big business ... period. Yeah, that really makes sense. Charge people an exorbitant amount hoping they'll use less. Who gets all that extra money? Why hasn't all that cash gone to developing alternative energy?
People are blind and actually believe that they must pay more taxes and higher fuel costs to save the environment.
As always, high prices really do little to limit consumption, they just put money in someones pocket.
If you want to reduce fuel usage just ration it.

President Bush has weakened many regulations designed to reduce pollution and preserve the environment - be it air, land or sea. His environmental record is abysmal.
His federalism record is on par with the liberals.
Anyway, I think that most environmental matters are better handled at the state and local levels.
There are certain areas where environmental law can be a federal matter (i.e. navigable waterways and perhaps industrial emissions that do have an interstate impact per the Commerce Clause) but for the most part, I don't care much for its meddling.

No one is predicting the end of the earth. Scientists are saying that natural global warming is made worse by man, and that we need to take action to reverse the trend, which if left unchecked (to leave something unchecked would not be what I consider a conservative ideal) could be even worse than terrorism around the globe.

New data shows oceans cooling
http://www.ocregister.com/
ocregi...cle_1245606.php
"The world's oceans cooled suddenly between 2003 and 2005, losing more than 20 percent of the global-warming heat they'd absorbed over the previous 50 years. That's a vast amount of heat, since the oceans hold 1,000 times as heat as the atmosphere. The ocean-cooling researchers say the heat was likely vented into space, since it hasn't been found stored anywhere on Earth."
Isn't this the exact opposite of what the GW doomsayers are saying?

Kitty, I've almost grown fond of you now, can I give you some advice? When you use cute little libtard Kool-Aid catch phrases, use them correctly.
When someone provides a fact, just because it doesn't fit in with your group think libtard mentality, doesn't mean it's not true, and doesn't mean it's not fact. In this case, cherry picking would not apply.
If I were arguing the merits of the Double Western Bacon Cheeseburger, and said, well it has onions on it, and onions are good for you. That, that would be cherry picking.

eat me? that's a bit childish, my friend. i've seen a few documentaries and done research for my wildlife biology class. listen, i don't have the facts offhand. i'm sorry if you don't seem convinced by me, but maybe you should ask a scientist.
i was pretty skeptical of graphs that illustrated climate change because it's easy to distorted scales- but the Inconvinient Truth checked out in my mind.- but there it was, the graphics compared 'normal' ice ages and warming periods (the temps & the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere) and at that time, everyone in the audience let out a sigh of disbelief. it was simply unbelievable. the normal warming period did not compare with the modern levels a bit, especially in the past 15-20 years.
so have you done your research or would you like to bust out some talking points? your choice, CHarles Darwin wannabe

“it was simply unbelievable. the normal warming period did not compare with the modern levels a bit, especially in the past 15-20 years.”
What’s a “normal warming period”?
I've yet to see anything so dramatic in the earths climatic history that is "unbelievable". I'm simply stating what I've seen so far doesn't warrant the mass hysteria that's erupted.
What I do find troubling is the concerted effort to silence critics of GW and the quickness of the “herd” to accept anything that spews from the orifice of the Goracle.
Lastly, why do you have a problem with anyone challenging the legitimacy of the UN’s findings?

ANY Government that thinks it can "manage" mother nature is being wholly irresponsible.
Evidence can be drawn from MANY examples throughout history of governments "preserving" nature only to have it blow up in their faces.
Man is a creature that feeds off of ego, and to believe WE are culpable for the total warming of the planet, or that we can somehow "manage" the global temperature is just moronic at best.

Darwin, are you troubled by Nasa's attempt to silence scientists that produce evidence that supports global warming theories?
to be honest, a group of scientists from many nations pretty much does it for me. however the quote, 'just because a million people think it's a good idea, doesn't mean it's a good idea'
so what do you base your arguement on? just personal experience? 'i saw this today, it snowed and i don't think global warming is something to be worried with?' because you know, the melting of the poles (and a mere 2 degrees temperatures rise) will raise the ocean levels around the world.. you wouldn't want your lovely twin towers to sink would you? and why do scientists, groups and countries- which remain independent of eachother- and come up with the same conclusions bug you?
i'd like to add that i have no problem with you challenging the facts, but you might as well have some of your own... not just your experiences

“are you troubled by Nasa's attempt to silence scientists”
No … it wasn’t an attempt to silence anyone. NASA prefers anyone proselytizing not use NASA as venue to portray their views as the official views of NASA. That guy is free to tell whoever he wants what he thinks … he is not however, free to exploit his NASA position when doing so.
In the same vein, aren’t you troubled by politicians who threaten to relieve state scientists unless they toe the global warming line as in Oregon and Delaware?
“to be honest, a group of scientists from many nations pretty much does it for me”
The UN report is not even a report at all. The final report is due in May. In addition, there was no consensus of scientists. The great majority had no input on the final opinion and most did not agree with the summary itself.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/1694.../site/newsweek/
“so what do you base your arguement on?”
The simple fact that no one … not one person has been able to state unequivocally that the tiny increase in temperature has been caused by man. In fact, most historical increases in CO2 are preceded by a rise in the earth’s temperature, not the other way around as the GW Nazis would have you believe.
“If you look at the ice core records, you will discover that yes, changes in carbon dioxide are accompanied by changes in temperature, but you will also discover that the change in temperature precedes the change in carbon dioxide by several hundred years to a thousand or so years. Reflect on that. And reflect on when you last heard somebody say that they thought lung cancer caused smoking. Because that is what you are arguing if you argue on the glacial time scale that changes in carbon dioxide cause temperature changes. It is the other way around,” Carter testified.
http://www.canadafreepress.com/
2...rming120706.htm
“because you know, the melting of the poles (and a mere 2 degrees temperatures rise)”
Even the most ambitious report will tell you if the current trend continues you’ll only see less than 1 degree of increase. Everything you believe has been greatly exaggerated.
Start researching yourself. The UN and it’s horde of political scientists are trying to pull a fast one. All you need to do is look around.
“i'd like to add that i have no problem with you challenging the facts, but you might as well have some of your own... not just your experiences”
