I believe it's time to arm our military personnel in DC. There is no reason why they should be cowering in 'well lit areas', altering their travel plans or hiding their badges.
Travel in pairs, carry SigArms .45 in a side holster, and walk proud. Our military does not exist for humanitarian exercises, but to inflict great harm to enemies of this country; Foreign or Domestic.
Anyone attacking a soldier should be dragged out into the middle of the street and shot.
They should treat them as enemy combatants and allow the soldiers to deal with them as they would in a combat zone.

First off - people who work for the gov't aren't allowed to wear their badges outside of work. We're supposed to take them off as soon as we leave the building.
Second - I don't want our country to be like the UK. Capitulating to the enemy by not antagonizing them with the unholy sight of the greatest uniforms the world has ever known! Uniforms that allow them the right to shoot off their mouths!
I would almost welcome a law that allows police to billyclub an asshat who goes off on a servicemember. But that would be true fascism.

Well, CC - maybe if they knew there was consequences for their actions they would back off. These people are notoriously cowardly - that's why they pick on old ladies, WWII vets, little boys and girls in wheelchairs. They know soliers are told not to confront them - so they feel safe and free to do so. If they thought they might get hurt they would never dare!
I know here in SD they have been told not to wear their uniforms off base for just this reason.
And CC and Alan, I have personally seen this behaviour. Two times I stepped in and verbally slapped the ever loving shit out of the bitches accosting those fine soldiers.
The third time, the boys took care of it on their own and it was classic. I'll never forget it. The couple slank to their car and rode away with their tails between their legs.
Ya know Wit, I don't ever recall being told to run away while in uniform. granted, my service was nearly 30 years ago, and memories fade with time. Military Police were there (and armed) to protect civilians and military alike, but I haven't read anything about MPs of late.
I can just about guarantee that no INIVIDUAL has demonstrated this kind of disrespect. They are typical bullies and mindless 'bots feeding off the energy of others to gain their courage to act.

I mean, I'm sure they're allowed to protect themselves, but let's face it - there could be some tool with a camera and who ends up looking like the bad guy? The servicemember, that's who!

I agree that during the tumultuous 70's Servicemen were ordered not to respond or engage; however, it was required that we be able to defend ourselves from physical attacks.
Of course that creates the opportunity for a Rodney King scenario, and our ‘4th branch of government’ known as the Liberal Media would jump all over it, but that doesn't relieve military personnel from their responsibility of protecting government property.
Personally, as a civilian, I'd engage on behalf of the soldier or sailor or would back them up in a scuffle, but that's me.
Personally for me, after losing friends due to their unselfish acts of service and seeing others who will never live the same life due to their wounds from such service, I would probably beat the ever living shit out of someone for this.
Right before the Iraq War began I saw 3 American soldiers stuff a little American flag into a Frenchie hippie's mouth in Montreal. This after the hippie screamed "Saddam Hussein is a great man".
They were out of uniform and couldn't be identified. What a shame!!!!
