I have long felt ballots should be in English. Amercans speak English - we always have. In the past, legal immigrants came to this country and learned the language, followed the rules, became citizens and voted - in English.
Court rulings insisting that people need not show identification to prove they are registered to vote and insisting it's racist not to provide ballots in their native language is usually only to aid in voter fraud. Guess which side...
Another point to be made would be that language unifies a people. Dems lately have been playing this divide and conquer game. They've been segregating people into little pockets of victimhood and then playing them off each other. By encouraging people to retain their native language over learing English they create yet another pocket of isolated victims who don't quite fit in.
A unified people feel part of the greater whole, as we have successfully done in our history. This unification aided us during World War II when a great number of our soldiers where the children of immigrants. Of many, we were one. We did not falter in our purpose.
This is what the dems have been attacking with great success for the last forty years. It's time to put an end to it.

To be a citizen, with the privledge to vote, you are required to be able to understand english. So why would there be a need to have any language other than english on a VOTING document? Most ghettos have spanish, ebonics, or some other minority language. Why? Because the poor living their are usually minimally educated and thus lack the proper skills to read, write, and speak proper English.
The whole fight over voting rights for these people was fought on the basis that excluding them based on their lack of English skills was discriminatory. This was courtesy of the democrats. Now we waste millions of dollars printing ballots for people who lack the intellectual capacity to make a rational choice in an election.

No one is discouraging (or at least no sane person) that people work to learn other languages in order to pursue an occupation or make more money (not that General Welfarists understand the notion of "free labor" because they unionize and regluate to death but I digress).
In my view, people can choose not to learn the English language, so long as they accept the consequences (stunting one's own education and professional ambitions and the inability to vote).
We have the ability to petition our government and voting is a cherished right. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that there is a "right" to vote in one's native language. That's the sort of half-brained positivist view I can do without. The sooner we learn that with choices come consequences, the sooner people like Newt can stop making statements that are more common sense in nature than anything else. If one wishes to oppose his views on the grounds of racism. So be it.
Besides, it's a huge waste of taxpayer dollars.

One involved the individual's right to pursue the education of his or her CHOICE and the other a FORCED government scheme involving the accommodation of people who have made the obviously bad choice of not learning enough English to make a vote. Rather, you nanny state types will shield them from responsibility by using the apparatus of government in a wasteful, horribly insufficient and arguably unconstitutional way to create accommodation schemes in the name of social justice.

I never said that I disagreed with Newt (in fact I agree with him), but there is a difference between calling a spade a spade (ie say no to politically correct B.S.) and being a dick (and I believe that comment was nasty and unecessary). Just for the record, down where I live there are plenty of English speaking white boys in ghettos and gangs, and I know that you have the very same issues in the U.S.; we were mugged several years ago by a gang of punks that were white as paste in downtown Chicago (we are white as well).
I find it true of any kind of bullying (schoolyard or not) that when you take away the humanity of the people you are targeting it is much easier to treat them like shit and get other people on your side. That's why, much as I agree with his sentiment (English is the only national language in the U.S. correct?), I was disappointed by his choice of comments.
We have the same issues in Canada with English and French, and they have yet to be resolved. I keep hoping that some sort of peace is forged, because I think that having the two official languages adds a lot to our national identity.

100 years ago no one cried racist when it was required to learn English if you wanted to become a citizen and to vote. Then the non-English speaking people were German, Russian, Italian, Polish, Hungarian, etc. It was expected they'd learn the language - and they did.

Jared - English is learned worldwide because it's the language of business worldwide, much like French was in the 18th century. However, the benefit is that everyone has one language with which we can all communicate - to conduct business. The idea behind a uniform language isn't to kill off all the other languages, it's to ensure open discussion, commerce, cultures, etc. Don't confuse language for culture, that's BS promoted only by the French.

Actually, pretty good. We have a cocker spaniel who we got as a pup. He LOVES the other dog, a cocker mix who we already had. He thinks he's his dad I guess. One cat thinks he's a dog, the other is a finicky feline but very loving. Cats and dogs all get along and when it's cold they all snuggle into one mass fur ball. All you hear is a deep purrrrrrrrrr from the middle.
Oh crap, that's really cute. My dog "purrs". It is very cute, she kinda makes little humming suggly noises. It makes me keep waking her up giving her kisses on her dotted snout.
I had a cat once, got it from a neighbor that was a vet tech. It was the sweetest cat. Then we moved and it became possessed. I mean psycho. ASttacking the dogs, us, furniture. In fact it was actually scary coming home, the cat would shoot out and try to bite you. We found her a new home. Quickly.

Back on topic: They did a whole show on this topic. What was starting to become clear was that rather than making money for business' it's starting to take a toll on them. People are starting to walk out of shops, fire contractors who send them and refuse to do any kind of business with them. Why? When I lived in Laguna Hills the condoplex had a "spanish" speakers doing the maintenance. My roommate and I both worked nights and these guys would start up with the gas trimmers at 7am. After several trys with asking nice in english I went out with a 357 one morning and miracle of miralces they now understood english perfectly. After that they NEVER cam near our condo until noon.

We had a referendum about ten years ago just in Quebec for a vote for seperation... Luckily the "no" side won out. I don't know which "canadiennes" you're familiar with (and I think I'm familiar with a hell of a lot more seeing as how I live here), but the ones I know were soooo relieved when it became apparent we were staying as one country and keeping the two languages. I don't think it's a bad thing to have some culture in your country. Hell, I can travel to France and mix right in with the locals (and I have).
As for how my health care is treating me, pretty damn good thanks very much! I had cancer last year, and had most of my medications and my operation paid for. If I'd gotten sick down south, I would have been fucked up the ass financially!

There is nothing wrong with speaking multiple languages, but refusing to learn or educate yourself in the most commonly used form of language of a country you move to is just, well frankly it's fucked.

An Indian customer service rep for one of my credit cards told me how it is. She was in one of those infamous India call centers. I asked her a few questions about making a better curry, she asked me a few about living in America and asked if I thought her English was good. I replied that it was indeed. She was very excited, because, she said, ENGLISH IS THE WORLDS LANGUAGE.

English IS the worlds language. When I was in Moscow and if a Russian and a Japanese person wanted to communicate - they spoke English. If a German and an Italian wish to communicate - they speak English. Signs in the Moscow airport are in Russian and English.
In fact most menues of the world are in both the native language and English. Not because that person might be from an English speaking country, but because if they know another language, it's most likely it's English.

I grew up speaking English (Anglophone), but my Mom's side of the family speaks German so I grew up speaking that as well as French too. I find with those two languages under my belt I'm able to go to Italy/Spain/Holland etc and even though I don't know Italian or Spanish or Dutch I'm able to pick up on most of what's going on. It's awesome!
