Jewish is a race AND a religion. That's why if the mom is a Jewess the child is Jewish. It is also a religion that people can convert to or from. Two separate issues - that's why you have a lot of Jew libs that always say they are non practicing Jews - they are Jewish by birth but don't practice the religion.
