Back in the days when I was in school, we had a place just off of school grounds that was surrounded by large pine trees and that is where the kids would fist fight, and I don't mean get down on the ground and wrestle, no dirty fighting was permitted it was a stand up and box type of fight.
The kids referred to it by saying to someone meet me behind the pines after school and everyone new that there was going to be a rumble.

Oh man! That's pretty wild.

We called it snuggies not wedgies
Also back in the days when I was in school the principle also had the authority to spank the living shit out of misbehaving kids. Our principle had a 6 foot long oar paddle with 1 inch holes drilled into the end of the paddle and he made the students bend over and touch their ankles and by the time he would get ready to swing that paddle you were gritting your teeth because you knew that this was going to hurt like a motha fucka.

Also to add to what I just said, the kids didn't go home later on and piss and moan to daddy saying that the Principle was being mean to me or anything like that back then your dad would have hauled off and smacked you one for being a pansy ass to begin with and then said, you were probably being a brat in school and deserved to get the paddle.

Phil,
Yeah, parents don't seem to take enough responsibility for their kids these days. It often seems to be someone else's fault.
I've taught quite a lot of guitar lessons. I used basically the same lesson plan for all of my students. The ones who practice, improve. The ones who don't practice, don't improve. Seems simple enough. I would get parents coming to me totally perplexed as to why their kid wasn't improving. Quiet often, when I suggested it was the kid's fault (ie. not practising), I'd hear things like "oh no, that couldn't be" and other excuses. Of course 9 times out of 10 when they'd sit in on the lesson they'd see that the kid has been given a ton of stuff to practice. They just don't.
Anyway, very frustrating.

The absolute worst thing that "we", and by that I mean I was part of it on the periphery; did in high school is one of the guys in our group who all the girls swooned over asked the school reject to prom.
He of course did not take her. It was really fucking mean. It was one thing to call her Snausages and canckle girl behind her back...but that was just too low.
The only thing that saved it from being too bad, at least for MY guilt factor, is unlike in the movies where the poor girl is played by the sweet Drew Barrymore, this girl was a total bitch from hell.
Did she deserve what she got. No way Jose and I still feel bad all these years later, but she really was a bitch. Uber style. Drama club bitch style. But no one deserves that.

Wow Jay thanks for clearing that up for me. I was sooooo confused.
Funny but when I think "ethnic" I assume you mean "ARAB" in this case. Do you know how many live in my hood? Plenty. I don't hate them, I hate Islam. And those who follow it. Arab chick at Marshalls today gave me a good tip on Tommy Hilfiger purses, I most certainly don't hate her.

This isn't a very good argument, Jonathan. Anything can be a bumper sticker.
The hate one has for meaningless things like traffic is not the same thing as the hate one has for a human being or many human beings.
When someone hates a group of people, it is because they fear them.
People who are arguing this with me have openly admitted that they fear radical Muslims. I fear fundamentalism and extremism too. My only argument is that I don't think this fear/hate should apply to the majority. I hate the ideal, not the people.
Peace Jonathan.

Jenn,
On your first point, don't put the cart before the horse. It's a very odd indicator given what's been going on in the markets, especially in the debt markets. The subprime lending market crashed and burned and it's affecting everything.
With benchmark rates (i.e. 10-Year Treasury) going up, widening spreads and lenders finally starting to pull back on the reins a bit, we could see a slowdown. Higher interest rates will reduce fixed income portfolio values and make any sort of investment more difficult.
Just the opinion of an economically illiterate geek.
Oh, and from the CBS report...
Adjusted to exclude one-time items, earnings from businesses operated in both periods rose 9 percent to $393.1 million, or 54 cents per share, from $360.8 million, or 47 cents per share, last year.
Gotta take out those one-time items, as they do not present any indication of the performance of ongoing operations.
The article also said the performance exceeded Wall Street expectations.
Oh, and I have studied guitar in the past and will continue to do so when I get time.

Darwin,
I work in an investment banking environment on commercial real estate transactions (typically sales). Although the subprime lending problems involved portfolios of residential loans, it has affected all forms of real estate loans. Most lenders do not keep the majority of the loans they originate on their own balance sheets. Instead, they sell them off to third-party investors. When those secondary markets start to get skittish, it will affect origination and pricing.

"Hate = fear" is a bumper sticker"
This isn't a very good argument, Jonathan. Anything can be a bumper sticker.
Don't be deliberately obtuse, Jay. A "Bumper sticker" in this context refers to things that are "catchy" as a bumper sticker but have no basis in reality. "Hate = fear" is one of those.
The hate one has for meaningless things like traffic is not the same thing as the hate one has for a human being or many human beings.
When someone hates a group of people, it is because they fear them.
Now look, Bill Clinton, you don't get to start redefining words here. You said, and I quote: "Hate = fear. This is a fact." We have all shown you the sheer idiocy of such a statement with real life examples of hate and fear, none of which were related.
So, having been exposed to the lunacy of your position, you have tried to state that "Hate = fear when it comes to groups of people." You should have said that from the beginning, if that was your contention, instead of your "bumper sticker" contention.
Here, see for yourself (from Roget's Thesaurus):
Main Entry: hate
Part of Speech: verb
Definition: dislike
Synonyms: abhor, abominate, allergic to*, anathematize, be loath, be reluctant, be sorry, can't stand*, contemn, curse, deprecate, deride, despise, detest, disapprove, disdain, disfavor, dislike, disparage, down on*, execrate, loathe, nauseate*, object to, recoil from, scorn, shudder at, shun, spit upon*, spurn
Antonyms: like, love
Notes: hate means to 'dislike intensely, loathe' and despise means 'look down on contemptuously'
The word "fear" appears nowhere on that page. Words means things, dude. They just don't mean what you say they do. I'm trusting dictionaries and thesauri over you, my man.

oh Mr Leffingwell
Why are you bothering with silly little concepts like facts and precise language?
Jay, I heard Marianne Williamson say it herself: "There's no bullshit like New Age bullshit".

HAHA!!! You guys are a riot!
Your refusal to see this is unbelievably funny. You're putting human being in the same category as pickles and traffic. Enough said.

"Your refusal to see this is unbelievably funny."
It may be funny but it's accurate. Hate does not automatically imply fear. I hate rude and self absorbed people ... does that mean I fear them? I hate people who are cruel to animals ... do I fear them? No.
I hate people who are viciously killing people all over the world and trying to shove their ideology down the throats of people who want nothing to do with it. Do I fear them? If I lived in any part of Somalia or Northern Africa I would ... but here, no. I still hate them.

Darwin,
"I hate people who are viciously killing people all over the world and trying to shove their ideology down the throats of people who want nothing to do with it. Do I fear them? If I lived in any part of Somalia or Northern Africa I would ... but here, no. I still hate them."
The reason you hate these people is because you fear what they could possibly do to you and this country. Your fear of what could possibly happen has led to your hate of these people. That's how it works.
Peace.

You're enveloping everything in your one definition. It doesn't work that way. Drink more coffee.
Score ...
darwin and everybody else - Jay's wrong.
Jay - I'm right
result: darwin and everybody else have you outnumbered and win.
Game over.

Darwin,
"You're enveloping everything in your one definition."
Incorrect.
HAHA!!! I didn't realize "defeating" me was so important to you, Darwin.
One of the foremost characteristics of fear is denying you have it. This is you.
Let go of your fear, Darwin.

"HAHA!!! I didn't realize "defeating" me was so important to you, Darwin."
Very few things are actually "important" to me. However, you have been defeated. It's your fear of accepting that which keeps you going.
Your point is vaild, but not in all cases. That is the only point I was making. You say fear of anything is the basis for hate of anything. You're wrong, you lost, you are defeated. Admit your defeat and humbly bask in the self-awareness of your fragility.

Kris.... hahaha... good one and just what I was thinking.

I fail to see the problem you and Kris have with the guitar. Do you have some asinine stereotype about people who play music? Please explain.
Peace!

Darwin,
"However, you have been defeated."
No, I haven't. Such a thing does not exist on an internet forum.
"You say fear of anything is the basis for hate of anything."
No, I didn't.
"You're wrong"
Incorrect.
"you lost"
Incorrect.
"you are defeated."
Incorrect.
"Admit your defeat and humbly bask in the self-awareness of your fragility."
You are the one who is fragile. You are weak Darwin. Very weak. You blame your problems on others. This is the essence of weakness.
Let go of your fear, Darwin. Only then will you find true strength.
Peace!

Jay, simply answering my points with "no", "incorrect" and "no, it's you" does not a strong argument make.
I ask you again to admit your defeat, face your fear and envelope yourself in the truth of reality.

The softer side? Anyone that says shit like go in peace and love your enemy ONLY has a soft side. Shove your peace and wake up to reality. My enemy hates everything about me - no matter what I say or do. I like my head right where it is.

I only way incorrect to things that are, in fact, incorrect.
Why do you people presume to know so much about me?

Kris,
"We're on Marianne Williamson and her, "there's no bullshit like nu-age bullshit"."
I agree in some cases. I don't adhere to the idea of "lettin' everyone be, man". There has to be some order. Peace, however, is by no means a "nu-age" ideal.
Peace Kris!

Jenn,
"My picture is on this blog everyone else knows what I look like.... I have nothing to hide."
Nor do I. I gave everyone here a link to my R&B band's MySpace. My picture is on there. I also mentioned who I was in the video.
I was merely pointing out Kris' blatant flaw in her stereotype.
Peace!
