There's a difference. The ones on college campuses are set up to ENCOURAGE free speech. You can speak freely anywhere you want subject to reasonable and content-neutral time, place and manner restrictions, and these zones were created as a haven from those restrictions. The point is to foster an understanding of civic involvement and the value of the 1st Amendment (not just its mere existence) by creating a safe space.
The ones republicans created are there to LIMIT free speech. They say you'll be punished for speaking unless you confine yourself to that designated area (NOT content-neutral,) and that area happens to be watched over by republican campaign employees impersonating police officers. The point is to keep anyone who disagrees with them out of the range of the cameras and off the evening news. That way they can pretend everything is just fine and everyone agrees with them.

I recommend visiting a college sometime. You might be pleasantly surprised.

I remember going to a few events involving Clinton appearances and seeing mobs of Republican protesters everywhere.
Then I went to a Bush fundraiser and was threatened by some thug who wasn't wearing a Capitol Police uniform or even the Secret Service earpiece. He refused to identify himself and said I'd be arrested if I didn't leave the PUBLIC park across the street from the venue. Even though I was peaceful, unarmed, not carrying a sign, and not even yelling any slogans, I was forcibly removed and told to go to the "free speech zone" which was a 1/4 mile away across the river. And all because I was wearing a shirt representing the other side.
