Works well enough here in Australia. Could probably be better funded if the federal government took control from the states, seeing as the Australian government - unlike individual state governments - is sovereign in it's own currency and therefore not revenue constrained. Just like the US government I believe.

Fozz, first of all, EVERYONE has access to basic healthcare in this country. It is against the law to deny medical care to anyone because they lack insurance. The issue here is insurance, NOT healthcare.
I cannot speak for anyone else, but I personally have a huge problem with the government TAKING money that I have worked hard to earn and giving it to someone else who chooses NOT to work or who fails to make intelligent decisions affecting their own life. It is NOT a right to have health insurance. It's a privilege. If you want insurance, WORK for it. Taking from your neighbor without their consent is STEALING.
So to answer your question, redistribution of wealth doesn't necessarily make one a commie, but it sure as heck makes them a socialist!

I wonder how many illegals Australia has. The one factor (besides reams of government regulation) that has skyrocketed the cost of health care is the illegal invasion. The cost of treating them is spread to the consumer and taxpayer.

But it's not only the illegals that use the ER as primary care, there are a lot of welfare recipient citizens that run their kids to the ER every time they get the sniffles. Actually, I read that around 80% of the uninsured are US citizens, not illegals.
Furthermore, around 80% of the uninsured are from working families. That's in fairly stark contrast to Kanaka girl's claim that the uninsured have CHOSEN not to work or have just made poor decisions.
Further still, it appears that 1 in every 3 US firms did not offer any coverage in 2007, many citing rising premiums as making it impossible.
And those who have been made redundant in the economic downturn? Are they still insured if they become unemployed through no fault of their own?
So unless everything I am reading is complete rubbish, Kanaka girl and witness's claims that those who lack insurance do so voluntarily or are illegal immigrants does not seem consistent with the facts.
So yes witness, on the face of it I would consider that socialised medicine could deliver results superior to these. The only thing I see holding it back is the possibility that there are enough people with your outlook so as to make it far too politically risky for elected leaders to attempt.

Why not Detmurds? There are people here arguing that socialised medicine would be a disater but I can tell you that where I am from, it is quite sucessful and has been so for a long time.
My attitude is somewhat different to some of those expressed here - I have no problem with the fact that the government appropriates a portion of my income and puts it towards things like socialised health care and welfare. Seems better to me than to see fellow human beings left rotting in the gutter because every last cent I earn is mine, mine, mine.

Fact of the matter is there are a lot of reasons people don't have health INSURANCE - that doesn't mean they don't have access to health CARE!
The figures thrown out here are 50 million people don't have health insurance. This is a lie just as it's a lie that we only have 12 million illegals. We all know that we have close to 50 million illegals. But I digress.
Say that 20-25 million of those are the illegals, the figures also leave out those who are covered by a spouses insurance. Also, many young people, in good health (I was one of those - in fact I haven't carried health insurance in almost 3 years, as I enjoy great health and didn't feel like paying the premiums every month for something I never used) don't carry insurance for the reason I stated above.
Also, many people (and I am also one of those) don't carry insurance and pay cash at point of service. It's easier, cheaper and the doctors love it! No formms to fill out or submit to an insurance company! They always knock off at least half the bill when you pay cash.
Several years ago I went in for an ear infection. Doc cured it almost immediately in office (it was like a miracle to me at the time) and the bill, had it been submitted to an insurance company would have been around $200 with my co-pay being around $40. I paid cash - $50. Believe me when I say I would have paid the $200 - it meant that much to me. But because I paid cash they was no overhead or insurance costs.
Also, these figures don't include those who only caryy catestrophic insurance only. That is insurance for generally healthy people who only carry insurance in case of severe injury or desease - like a car accident or cancer.
Our biggest problems here is not being able to shop out of state for competing insurance rates. We also need tort reform because most of the hospital and doctors costs are lawsuit insurance.
Also, since illegals use our emergency rooms as primary care givers they have gone broke because these people don't pay anything and they come in for diaper rash a sniffles. It's a freakin joke! get rid of the illegals and half the problem is solved.
Bottom line is all your socialized western countries come here for our health care. Killing that is sentencing them (including your own countrymen) to certain death in three continents. Add that will doctors no longer practicing here (why should they?) and all research and drug advances will cease.
But I guess that's what all you flat earthers want - an huge decrease in the human populace!
