Talk to the Goat

You know, I was about to accept your views as a reasonable film critic. Then I saw Spanglish in there. THEN I remembered what you wrote in your profile.

*long shuddeerrrrr*

Well OK, there IS Paz Vega ...

J.A.P.

Man.
I wasn't sure about closer.
And Spanglish has always been on my list.

But I thought Crash was the name of another movie....

Stupid duplicate titles.

Anything with Brendan Fraser and Don Cheadle in it should be watched...

Haven't see Crash yet. Saw Spanglish and Closer. LOVED Spanglish! Closer, well it was depressing to me. Well acted, written, directed.....but just somewhat empty and sad...Made me grateful for my husband and the life we have though.

I will pick up Crash to see though. Purely because YOU recommended it!
3T

o...k i will trust your judgement and watch these movies

I have just found your bog. It looks great.
I think I am going to watch Crash, watched the trailer just a few second ago... Although I dislike film about racism, it's kind of appealing to me.
I am def. not gonna watch Closer and am very thankful for you for your intelligent summary. I am so not into those kind of movies.
Let me second 3T in her opinion

It is my opinion that good movies, like any art, don't necessarily have to evoke happiness. It is enough that they make you feel passionately one way or the other.

Some times it is the saddest of stories that make you see beauty where none existed before, or make you appreciate life and what you have just a little more.

Sure, Jay. I agree.

Just in case, I'll agree too!

J

Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser AND Ryan Phillippe?

I'll watch on that principle alone!

I have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Crash at Blockbuster as I missed it in the theaters here. It looked like a can't miss one to see.

I enjoyed Closer, or rather agree that it should be seen, it is not at all an enjoyable movie.

Spanglish I thought was a bit boring, or too long for my attention span. I enjoyed it in parts, but in the middle I phased out and my brain shut off and couldn't pay attention for some of the time.

I LOVED those movies!

Closer and Crash were a worthy way to spend a few hours indeed.

Spanglish? well it meant well...

Wow, three movies I have yet to see. I'll add them to the list. I've heard good things about Crash.

I just saw the Brothers Grimm...it was exactly that--Grimm

I was so disappointed at the suckyness of this film!!!

You once told me that the most praise you ever give to a movie was "yeah it was good." I've been brought up on lies.

Hmmm haven't seen any of them. I've heard good things about Crash though, maybe I'll go see that.

Lately I've been watching too many comedy movies. The 40 year old virgin was pretty good. :D

Dave: did you miss the movie vs film disclaimer at the beginning? I stand by my words.

Although I have only seen Closer, I know that Crash and Spanglish will soon become 2 of my favorites. I completely agree with your "segregation" of the types of films... I thought I was the only one who posted about Closer...

Found you by way of Neil at Citizen of the Month...

i hear ya...

Crash is Definite Must See movie.. I haven't seen Closer but from your review I might have to.

Interesting...

I hated Closer...I did not care about any of these self absorbed, self important, hateful characters...at all...

Spanglish...I really enjoyed. It gave me great hope for your love...Adam Sandler...he was sweetly effective in this movie...who knew he could act? Paz Vega was stunningly good. She glowed.

I haven't seen Crash...but am going to...

The point of Closer IS to hate the characters; they are despisable, and disposable. If you feel empty, then it has accomplished its meaning, hasn't it?

As for Adam, I do adore him...but he is the first to admit that if he has ever done good work, it is to the credit of the director.

Paz is breathtaking.

i normally see a movie a week, but due to kid committments, i haven't been able to get out. i haven't seen any of those, guess i'll have to look for them on video. i did see catwoman, it was a freebie on the movie channel we get, it pretty much sucked.

A triple whammy! Spanglish was such a surprise---Dave and I went because we wanted Adam Sandler to make another good movie, and he did! He did! And my God, Paz Vega was so beautiful.
Closer is the downer of all time about people. You're right, you can't care about the people but it's amazing to me that someone made such a compelling movie about such worthless folk.
Crash is on my list as Dave and I had promised not to see it without the other and couldn't make it work in the theatre so it's a renter.

Spanglish = Good movie, horrible name.

(Runs to the video store) Thanks Jamie!
Lois Lane
P.S. Do you take nominations for fucktard of the week? If so, I'd like to humbly nominate RKelly and his stoooopid song from the VMAs last night. Did you see that? (shakes head)

dammit all. i haven't seen a single one of these movies. but they are now on my renting list. i swear it.

i feel i should confess that when people say "film" i want to punch them. but i won't punch you, because i have already decided i like you. so you can keep saying "film" but please understand taht if i cannot punch you, i will at least roll my eyes in a very dramatic fashion.

patresa

The only one I'd consider seeing would be the last one, sugar. The last two I could really lead my life without ever seeing.

Better Safe Than Sorry - I haven't seen it myself, but I know what you mean: when I lived in a bigger city, we had "the box", which meant a lot of free movie channels, which means a lot of free though super-shitty movies.

Lorna - I agree that Spanglish was a surprise. I always love Adam, but the movies he makes are usually the kind that give me a mindless giggle. I did like Brooks' last effort, As Good As It Gets though; Jack Nicholson is to die for.
Also, based on the posts of yours I've read about movies, I do think you will like Crash, as much as it can be liked. Perhaps appreciated is the better word. We had a hard time catching it also, since we live in a crummy culture-vacuum of a city.

Peter - I think the name is funny, probably because as a child at an all-french school, we giggled about speaking "Franglais", which was very naughty. Of course at the time we believed we'd coined a new word. Ah, nous etions tellement droles!

Patresa - Film, film, film, film, film. Which is a word that I would never be able to avoid, even if I wanted to, also because of my frenchification.

B - I could live my life without reading books or hearing good music too, but I wouldn't want to. Culture/art/whatever you want to call it is what separates us from the animals. And by animals, I am indeed referring to my in-laws.

i hear lots of hype about "crash".... what's it actually about though?

Hmm, I will look into seeing these movies, perhaps. Especially since Closer has Natalie Portman in it. Hot. Super hot.

I haven't watched Spanglish and Crash but I did watch Closer. I really enjoyed it (in a very heart-wrenching kinda way). I felt that I connected with the film coz it kinda reflected my life a lil (makes me think how fucked my life is sometimes). And it's also bcoz of that movie that i'm trying to NOT be like the characters.

Will definitely try to watch Spanglish and Crash.

Wow Jay... You're so.... passionate.

I love you too, Jay...

I have not been to a movie in soo long. the last one i saw was a cartoon for the kids. I got to get out more.

Your review of Crash is incredibly similar to a review of the same film that a pal gave to me on Sunday (probably at around the time that you were writing this post). Great minds and all that.

JQP, thank you for not saying meatloaf.

Kim, that's the "polite" way to put it.

Clairus, like I said, Crash is about racism and prejudice. It follows a bunch of LA types around for 24 hours ...the story is not in what they do, but how they interract.

Also to Ian: I make that very sandwich for Jason all the time. How very male of you to be distracted by it! Actually, on the Spanglish DVD they have a little featurette of the making of the sandwich, complete with recipe.

Closer- at the end of it I was bored and vaguely disgusted.

Spanglish - At the end I had faith in humans, doesn't happen often but perhaps there are some actually genuinely nice people out there who care about what reactions their actions will create.

Crash - I have yet to see it but as I work at Blockbuster I will be getting it this weekend. Woohoo!

Brother's Grimm - Before I heard anything about it I thought it was a Drama Suspense. I read an article on it from the Tribute mag (the mag they have in the theatres to keep you from getting severely brain numbed before the show starts) and it said it was a comedy. It lived up to it. Kind of a Reverse princess bride cross Willow cross Babes in Toyland movie. Slapstick Humour with Cheap horror thrills. It amused me and I didn't feel like I wasted my money. It was good.

If you were looking forward to the hottness of Matt and Heath I'm sorry, but early 1800's it was pretty hard to be attractive. I mean the sideburns and then long hair and the ugly harry potter glasses. It just didn't happen.

EF.

Crash stayed with me for days afterward.
