Talk to the Goat

I'd take it to the "library" full of bus drivers and then tell the other library which branch it ended up in.

I'm currently reading "The DaVinci Code". Entertaining as fiction, horrilby inaccurate as history. I never got into the Russian authors. I'm more of a Sci-Fi reader myself anyway. If you want some interesting reading with unexpected endings, read Iain M Banks. Use of Weapons and Against a Dark Background are excellent books that will make you jump out of your seat and go "I can't believe that just happened!"

Oh, being in a library is right up there with having sex for me. I have a similar issue, in that the town I live in has THE smallest library in the county. It's smaller than my house, and has all sorts of weird hours. Really, I don't know why I haven't moved yet for this reason alone!

Jamie, Goldhawk Park might be closest to you - it's off Alton Towers Circle.

Woodside Square and Malvern would also be close, but are in slightly more ghetto area.

Good luck returning the book.

Wow, a girl after my own heart. The library is one of the first things I Google once I get set up. Did you see your post on www.baggagereclaim.co.uk yet? It's still on the front page I think.

let me know, and i'll borrow books from the york university library for you.

Shereen, I could kiss you!

here in mississauga, we have one main library and all sorts of little libraries, with weird hours. however, our library is also on line, which means you can go on line, request a book, video, dvd, request the location you would like to pick it up at and when it arrives to your branch, you are sent an e-mail or reeive a phone call saying it's in. there is even an indication on line that lets you know how many people have requested the book ahead of you, if it's 1 or 2, you get the book within a few weeks, but if it's 40 or 50, you might not want to even bother.

Portrait of the Artist as a Young man.. the only book i have EVER THORN IN THE GARBAGE, literally. I'm glad you found some place to get books, our libraries SUCK here.. hardcore. but i guess teh sunshine is meant to make up for that, BAH!

I miss the Urbana Free Library in Urbana, IL. They had the BEST collection of CDs ever (not that I ever took them home and copied them...ahem).

How do you find time to read every day?? That makes me jealous. I have to settle for books on CD in the car, but it's not the same as curling up with the book in a cozy chair...

Regarding the comment from 'better safe than sorry', TPL has the same thing, too. You can request what book you want online, and where you want to pick it up. Very convenient!

If you ever get a chance, try and visit theOakwood Village Library (at Oakwood and Rogers); my husband who works there is always very helpful and friendly!

Oooh, the libraries of Toronto intrigue me. Can you believe I've only been to the Kingston central location library only once? It was to get a library card, which never happened because they wouldn't do it without my id (duh). I've only ever dreamed of going back, but I think it will actually happen this weekend. I'm finished my book and in need of something not Harry Potter.

Glad to see you've found your libraries!

Patricia, I will definitely be doing that. Usually librarians know me by name - my book consumption alone increases staffing! Ideally, I would love to visit all 99.

I adore libraries as well. On my visit to NYC a highlight of the day was sitting in the NY public library reading room.

That aside.

How bad do your carpets have to be to close a building down for 3 weeks. Seriously.

Don't worry...you can usually return it to any library as long as its in the same country.

And I love the library. I actually had to ask what their maximum number of books were that an individual could have checked out. I hardly ever buy books anymore.

No Nabokov!!!!!! It's a sin I tell you.

You should have made a plea on your blog for people to send books to you...I would have gladly contributed! If you ever need a library by mail, just let me know and I'd be glad to be book-pals with ya!

the thing that confounds me about the TPL is that there really isn't a CENTRAL library -- the closest we get is the reference library near yonge & bloor.

however, the library at UofT is really, really good -- damned if i can remember the name of it right now -- it's near museum station on the university line.

I've made many trips to the main branch in Calgary. They need to build a new building.

Actually, the interbranch loan thing makes my life so much easier when I get the book reading bug. Problem is that Podcasts have killed my desire to read.

Actually, I've been invading thrift stores lately. You'd be amazed at the wonderful books hidden among the trash pulps there. People don't seem to care for works of fiction anymore, and I've discovered some great oldies and a few first additions for just a few $$. And if you like paperbacks, they have grab bags with 4-6 books in them for $1.99 and sorted by genre. Usually at least one of the books is anywhere from OK to great and sometimes you hit the jackpot.

So try treasure hunting in the thrift stores one rainy day when you have nothing better to do. Who knows, you might get lucky.

In Frostbite Falls the library is attached to the rod and gun shop. Lots of books on making your own plaid shirts, books like "1001 ways to make jerky out of leftovers" and a couple of Kurt Vonnegut books that were banned by the local high school in the 1960's. They have about 20 or so very large books that you can't check out filled with French Impressionist Art and a CD collection consisting of 1 Barry Manilow Greatest Hits, Perry Como Christmas, and Jerry Reed songs from the Smokey and the Bandits movies.

So needless to say we turn to the Frostbite Falls hardware store for music (attached to the Lutheran / Presb. Church (they share the building) I was amazed to find my human bring home a Bela Fleck and the Flecktones CD which was in the discount bin for $1; it's my all time favorite music to listen to in the car - it is awesome!!

This proves again that great art, like beautiful wild flowers, can be found in the strangest and most unforseen places. Kind of like discovering your wonderful writing on your blog come to think of it.

Cal

Most importantly, does it have any Danielle Steele, because personally, I can't get out of bed without having read at least one chapter a day.

You and I are in the same boat. Only I wondered where the nearest Barnes & Noble was when I first got here.

Some days I hate it here and want to go back to Tulsa. And others I really like it here and am excited to discover new things.

I guess we just have to try our best to get somfortable in our new surroundings.

I'm glad you found the library Jay. I know your need for more books will lead you back to the correct library.

Checking out the library is also the first thing I do. The library in this small town doesn't have any Nabokov either, or Dostoevsky for that matter. It's a helluva place if you want a cheesy romance or western though. Note: extreme sarcasm in last sentence.

I do like a good libriary. we have several here in Birmingham. but i would not Know dostoevshy if he walked up and hit me in the back of the head with The House of the Dead

Some of the classics from yesteryear didn't need editors. They simply needed better translators.

Miss Mac, I know you are teasing me and I refuse to be baited!

No Jorge, they needed editors. All of them. I have really been astounded at what was considered publishable.

Snagley, I'd say it's highly unprobably that Dostoevsky would accost you, but then, stranger things have happened. But if it does, let me know!

As I haven't read any of the books you mention, but I do have in interest in, but I'm also way lazy, I'd appreciate a short summary of each novel. Bullet points are acceptable.

Ah, the complexities of Toronto...

The Brothers Karamazov was... okay. The ending was horrible, but so was the epilogue for Crime and Punishment. Some authors should just cut it short sometimes.

The ending of Ubik would have been so much better without one sentence.

Libraries here are awesome! They have study rooms that you can reserve, and plenty of copies of every kind of book you can imagine. Except erotica...they don't do much in the way of that. Pity, too.

I haven;t been to my local library in a year. the reason being that I developed this weird thought of other people smudging the pages I would read. It's strange I know..i hope it's not OCD!

Your reading list is admirable. I compliment you on your choices.

I thought I was the only one who did this! Especially the 'none-waiting' problem. I cannot go to sleep at night if there are not at least three books in the house that I haven't read.

Of course, I also hate to give books back once I have my hands on them, which would explain the astronomical late fees and general brokeness from buying too many books.

I think I have a sickness.

Poor Courney. But remember, when the cause is good, like books, it's not a sickness, it's tradition!

Dave, you know, I actually write a blurb about every book I read because I found that my memory is just too bad, and I forget which ones I've read. I only have lists for 2004 and 2005, but so far that's almost 200 classic novels, including lots of Dickens, Tolstoi, Austen, Bellow, Faulkner, Hardy, Waugh, Woolf, Shakespeare, etc, etc. I'm tired just thinking about all the books I've read! And yes, Jason thinks he should just be able to look over my notes and skip the 1200 page novels altogether. Bastard.

It happened.
the old dude clocked me with Crime and Punishment.
i cry Foul Foul
said he has not really been dead. just hiding out in Birmingham Alabama waiting for someone to try to look his name up in the card catalog.

Are you my long-lost sister, or what?

You wouldn't have the problem of wondering where to return the book if you just shoplifted them like I do. Also, I like your taste in books - I think you'd like Stephen King.

Yeah....apparently I was not notified that today is tease jamie day!

"how will I ever remember where to return it?"

Why, you just follow the bus drivers to "that room"!!

I read every single night when I go to bed, it's what gets me sleepy. And like Junebugg said, going to thrift stores gets you moocho amounts of books for just a few Loonies. The best place for that here in Edmonton is Goodwill.

I used to live in a town like that. The library was actually in 1 of those strip malls & was opened only a few days a week. Classy stuff.

well duh libraries are the most important thing about any new town

The Malvern branch somebody mentioned earlier had an overhaul recently and is a nice-looking library.

There are actually times I'll use going off to some far-flung branch to go wandering around the city (true, there is one almost across the street from me - Mt. Pleasant - but it's got to be the tiniest one in the city!)

oh, i love the library. i love having kids, just to take the library. i love living on a county line, because i have two library cards, one for each county. i love that our libraries allow you to reserve books on line. i love that i have a 45 minute commute, because i can listen to books on tape. i love library fines, because i can say, 'keep the change. consider it my donation to the library.'

this is, of course, a cry for help.

Nothing is cooler than the library. And they have that smell... aaaahh.... and the books of course.

i love your passion for books. and the way you just lose yourself in them.

It's funny, darling. I have more the big-chain bookstore mentality than library mentality. I buy all these books I intend to read, but then I end up giving them away before they've all been read.

I couldn't imagine frequenting a library for the secret shame that I'd inevitably end up loaning a book to friends or family without realizing it wasn't actually mine to lend.

Don't laugh. I actually did that back in grade school when a friend of mine asked me to pet-sit her cat and I ended up giving it to the lonely neighbor girl down the block.

It's so easy to give away things that aren't actually yours, you know, sugar?

THats not odd at all Jay.... I have my library card number memorized so you are going to the wrong person if you are looking to be called "A Freak"

The world needs more Dostoevsky and Nabakov.... I'm not big on Isaac Babel though, too many bad Russian Lit class memories on that one...

Leacock? Genius? I suppose, but I never really enjoyed his work.

Of course, I've not read much other than Sunshine Tales of Maraposa (I know that's not the proper title, but I can't remember it, and I'm too damn lazy to google it at the moment).

lol. i enjoyed your sarcasm maybe because it was not aimed at me! and those who show their butt cracks crack me up!

Damn, the window closed as I was typing. As I was saying: Dostoevsky is my fav author, and, there are only two good libraries in TO: The Toronto Reference Library & the North York research library. The rest suck. The public are not allowed in the main U of T library (Robarts), but U of T has 40+ other libraies to choose from.

Where the hell are you living in Toronto??? I used to kill so much time at the Reference Libaray sitting at the back with the floor to ceiling windows that look out over Toronto. The other libraries here are very small and community based. There are about 3 in my immediate area along - it really depends on where you're located. I can point you to some great spots & reading rooms if you're interested. You gotta come to the west end (west of Bathurst) it's where all the good shit's at.

As post titles go, this one gets an A+.

Oh, and don't forget: Overdue = Bad.
That's a reference to the library book loans (although it could be construed as something much more serious).

Your love of reading inspires me so.

My Hubby makes fun of me...calls me a library geek...but it's the best use of taxpayer money I know...most of the time.

A good library defintely priority. Dostoyevsky is one of my favorite authors although I loved Crime and Punishment more than B.K.
I can't remember Joyces' A Portait of an Artist as a Yong Man except that our AP Enlgish Class in h.school discussed it to pieces, as was required. You're reading our reading list from that course, which counted as 1 yr's college course if we passed this National Exam w/ a certain score. I wish I had the time to re-read so many of these, I can only re-read portions, when I'm teaching English workshops or discussing the book w/ my daughters who are also reading the lit books for school. Ack I need an editor, but htis haloscan is so small font I cannot see! Forgive moi.
