Talk to the Goat

I have to admit, I only read like NO BOOKS THIS YEAR! (as of January 1, 2006 of course

Ive been reading lots of catalogues though...they keep my brain active because I look at the pretty pictures...

Good try though; we all get something- fantasy, getting lost in thoughts, new dreams, or food.

My favorite is the can label that says "venison, potatos"

What a fantastic resolution to give someone! I hope the mental picture of you standing in line with all the geeks in the spring will be enough to entice and sustain him. That has got "freakin hilarious from Jamie's point of view" written all over it.

Plus, I mean, you'll be able to talk to him about stuff you've both read.

So - what are your guidelines for what types of books will count towards the 100 books? Must all the books have words? Do comic books count? The Ikea catalog runs easily to 100+ pages, does it count? If he reads one Dickens novel, will that count as like 56 books because they were originally published in chapter installments?

Does Playboy count? Holy mamma....100 books is a lot. I read every single night in bed and I'm not a slow reader, but I'll bet I only get maybe 50 a year in!

I know you're a quality girl normally, but it reads like here you're just hoping for quantity.

Can he read Erotica, and would that help him get through more books?

Pssst Jason, read up on Bluffer's Gudie to Literature and then just use your knowledge to claim your 100 books. Happy Playstationing.

Therese, yeah, more like talk about stuff I read a gazillion books ago!! Last year we tried to read Tess of the D'Ubervilles together; I read 3 other books first, to give him a head start, and he never made it past chapter 2.

The books must have words in them, but there is no minimum word count. I read Dickens myself and it only counts as 1 - and I have to always be reminding Jason that the "goodness" of a book has nothing to do with the number of pages it has. He has trouble with that one. He doesn't read comics, or catalogues. Any books will do...he likes true crime (gag), but I do hope he'll follow in my footsteps and read some of the classics that I've been into. Not too likely, but a girl can hope.

Kel, the point is to READ MORE, so yes, we're talking quantity here. If he finds a genre he likes, then so be it. Reading anything is better than nothing.

Culfy, don't you be giving him thoughts. Actually, he could just tap into my email because I have it way better than the bluffer-s guide - I have a summation of my book list from the past 2 years.

100 books, wow! That's quite an ambitious goal! Mine's a quick read at only 55,000 words. Are there any word/page minimums?

Hi Jay, I don't think I could go a day without reading something. I read extremely quickly though so 100 might not be a good bet for me. Then again, it might keep me off my laptop a little more...

Well, keep in mind I'm not buying PS3s for just anyone who reads 100 books. I myself read twice that much last year. I'm just trying to help Jason form a new habit.

Good luck

As for Play Station... we've got a PS1, talk about outdated. We don't have anything newer and still it hasn't been played in a year or so. :|

Is there a page minimum set on these books he has to read (like nothing under 100 pages)?

Hey, if you're afraid that beloved PS2 will sit unattended to once the PS3 takes over, you can send that baby on over to me and I swear I will love it with everything that I have.

I'm reading Blindness right now.

Pretty interesting, I must admit.

I enjoy reading but don't think I could go through 100 books in a year. Not until the kids move out of the house anyway. Best of luck to him.

Yay, Jason! Good luck!

Might I recommend "There's a Monster at the End of This Book"?

I hope he starts getting into it...there's no better drug than books...well maybe heroin, but I wouldn't know.

100 books is just so many. You should have said 10 and made the prize smaller,ha,ha..

Whew, Jay A book every 3.65 days is a pretty heavy load. Better throw in a vacation too, lol

DB

100 books! i strongly urge jason to visit the YA section of the library and read Sweet Valley High. those are page turners!

ph

I think we'll have to take a vacation just so he has time to sit and read!

the ps3 is projected by all the geeks to come out in 2007. at least you'll know he fulfilled his obligation before it comes on the market.

e+

I have read 7 books since Thursday (It's Tuesday today)... This is because a) I'm on vacation AND b) because I've been sick while on vacation and so have been stuck at home.., (is there no justice in this world?). I'm going away tomorrow for a week and am only taking 2 books.

I hope its enough...

LOL !!! Making a resolution for Jason! That's brilliant Jay! (And yes made me laugh)

I like this concept you have come up with. Except I want my hubby to give ME anything I want, for reading 100 books this year. (Does my kids' 4th & 5th grade AR books thru school count?) Naaahh, he won't go for it. Because I would give up cooking, cleaning and sex to reach my goal to get what I want.

I'll cheer for Jason though!

Note to Jason: Hit the library, picking books that are related to topics you find of interest.

Keep us posted on his progress Jay.

i only read one book last year, it was one written during that nano writing thing and before that, i haven't finished a book since my youngest was born, 11 years ago. i did read one last week and i'm planning on doing a post about this miracle. i miss reading, but i don't think i could ever have read 100/year even before i had kids. good luck to him and good luck to you too. that playstation 3 sounds expensive, maybe you should tuck away $10 for every book he reads.

Touché.

I guess just getting him to read anything, anything at all, is a bonus then.

Maybe you can sneak a page or two inside the pages of comics. Or hey, books on tape! Yes! Give him... like... really trashy romance novels on tape. *giggle* No wait. That's defeating the point, and is just for entertainment. Never mind that.

Good luck though, in any case. Hee hee.

I'm not sure what prize I'd have to offer to get my hubby to read anything other than sports Illustrated...but it would have to be good!

Therese, you are too funny. Yeah, totally besides the point!!

BSTS - that's a good plan. Unfortunatly, I eschew good plans. Most likely I'll just leave it to the last minute and have to sell a kidney. Or, just not buy shoes that week. So probably the kidney.

Deeleea - Jason is already considering taking a sick day, don't encourage him!

Well anyone in need of some falling-asleep reading, here you go... http://invisible-touch-novel.blo...l.blogspot.com/

Books? Great idea!

I usually think resolutions are kind of lame but they seem to be helping me get my ass in gear this year (despite the fact that the year is only 9 days old).

I pledged to get my lardish rear end back in the gym and to be MUCH more fiscally responsible. Let's just pray I stick to it!

I love the challenge, I hope he does it. And I know who to ask if I have any questions about chapstick.

Does he think the 'Dick and Jane' books count? Perhaps The Adventures of SpongeBob?...

Ambitious man he is. You may get lucky and not have to get him the PS3 till the end of the year!

100 books is easy...from the child's section of the library

I thnk you are an innovator.

I wonder if Jeff knows how to read?

that works out at nearly 2 books a week, has he not figured out its a sucker bet yet? whats the forfeit when he fails in this task *grin* are you planning on somewhere nice?

I'll suggest Animal Farm and The Basketball Diaries. With the first, she's short, she's an easy read, and you get bonus points for it being Literary. With the second, it's short, and there's all sort of sex and drugs (no rock and roll, sadly).

I'm no psychic, but I think it's going to go down like this.

1.) he won't read the books
2.) he'll get the PS3 anyway.

Cheatin' bastard. ;D

My old man never read any books outside of school requirements until the age of 32!! Boys are weird.
Lois Lane

what else does a man need. love of a good woman, a brand spanking new console hehe i'm sure 100 books is going to be peanuts..

Superfudge! I love it! But have him start with "Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing" and THEN go on to "Superfudge."

Dear god, why do I still remember that?

"100 Years..."... That book has a lot of inertia to overcome. But if he can get past the first 50 pages, the reward will be great. I'd recommend The Princess Bride. Easy to read and fun tool. Or Jurassic Park. That one is like a rollercoaster. The movie sucked though.

Well, I must say, Crichton is one of those authors I caution Jason to stay away from. Grisham, King, etc, are not the best there is in literature. I think it's important for him to discover more than just the normal best seller sink pits.

I've read a few of Crichton. Didnt impress me much but Jurassic Park was much better than the others and was very fun. It was like "Oh no! Not that", flick the page. Repeat. Quite a ride.
And if u look at Marquez or Coelho, it's all translated anyway, so u are at the mercy of the translators. Good thing they do a good job.
Oh yeah, "Where's Wally?". You cant go past *that* book.

You two consistently have me LMAO. *cheers and does a little pom-pom routine for Jason*
I think that's a great resolution. Lever's 2006 resolution for me was to stop wearing knickers. (He's not too quick...he should work on the "get to same continent" before he tries to have me lose my underwear.)

what exactly do you DO for a living? cos the only thing that allows me to read like 200 books a year myself is that i'm a student.

Dude, I'm a writer!
