Talk to the Goat

Damn I LOVE reading your posts Jay! Your writing immerses me into the story. I can see the trailer park, the old bat, and the happy light that was Sarah, and of course you. (And the sweaty squatty Elvis)

I loved this peice. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Great story. A little bummed by the not so happy ending, but a great story nonetheless!

Thank you, also, for visiting my blog ... I was so excited to "see" a new face in the comments

Wow, I really liked this post despite its sad ending. What a shame about Sarah.

By the way, what's wrong with a White Russian? I love them...does that mean it's not long before I'm a lonely drunk in a trailer park? Ah well...

No, I don't think the 2 are necessarily correlated (at least, i hope not!) but I just don't feel that milk should ever be used as a mixer.

" all the very best that a trailer park had to offer "

That line says so much in so few words! Excellent post, as always. Your writting keeps getting better.

if only she could know you would one day do this beautiful tribute to her.

I like your writing, and could see the bar as clear as if I'd been there. Very sad about your friend Sarah.

I feel the same sort of nostalgia about every age, just the other day I was thinking that I'll never be 23 again (as if that was a great year??)...

Great piece of writing. Still cracking up that the rhinestone jumpsuit is the only qualification for making a believable Elvis night!

With you talking about the well known bar [and, I believe, emoployer of my sister], I didn't expect to wind up on the front yard of the school.

The tree planting was just as you described it, and your words brought back the chill.

I'm impressed you improvised drinks. I've asked actual bartenders in actual bars to make me drinks I've only heard of before, just to try them, and they won't do it, often! Even if they have a bartender's guide! (last summer I was after Old Fashions and Sidecars)

v. sad about Sarah.

This post pulled me all over...sad, laughing, grossed out.... STill I need to ask for more: What are urine cakes, preytell?

Never quite thought of Canadian Trialer Parks before. I've read two of your posts and am hooked. I'll have to save you as a favorite now. Very sorry to here about Sarah's terrible accident.

It's a disinfectant block placed over the drain of urinals.

I love your writing and your storytelling. I can distinctly picture everything that you write about. your words are very telling, and for that, I religiously check your blog, hoping and aching for updates.

thank you.

The Chinese say, the one who has the most stories, is the richest man (or something like that).

I could never handle being a waitress so I never tried. I just know I would end up like my sister who got fired once for handing back a guy his $1 tip. hah.

Third paragraph: That's gonna be me. :D

Everyone should have the pleasure of knowing someone like Sarah.

I've tried being a server and boy did it ever suck. People are so stingy with tipping! I once got 15 cents from some stuck-up teenagers.

Yet another wonderful post from you Miss Jay : )

This post really surprised me. I didn't see that coming. But then again, that's exactly what this post is about. Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans.

Very nice Jay, as usual

P.S. They still use those urinal cakes... and the smell would knock a buzzard offa shit wagon, lol

P.P.S. Speaking of Trailer Parks, come over and visit our "virtual" park for a few laughs. You'll find a link on my sidebar

White russians... hmm, my friends and I always used to start a big night with 2 of those, mistakenly thinking the milk would 'line our stomachs' and we'd not get bad hangovers. I worked out many years later that the hangover prevention of 'don't have too many' is more effective.

Wow, I can just hear the crickets chirping and feel the humidity outside. Really good post, Jay (as usual).

Poor Sarah. This is the second blog today that I have read with a story of an early death.

Beautifully done. Didn't expect it to end that way. Which is why it's so fitting. Seventeen year olds haven't a clue as to how things might end. I'm happy you appreciated the moments you had and shared them so perfectly to us. I'm sorry they came to such a sobering end.

Hey, what's a guy have to do to get a blogroll around here? Goose the waitress?

i was sad to read about sarah..

That is a great and unexpected ending. It ties in nicely, though. There is something about seeing one's own mortality that brings out the appreciation for the more arduous tasks in our lives.

Also, 10 cents for wings? Really? Where can I get that?

Jay, Beautiful story as usual.

Your Old Bat reminds me so much of my first boss, the Old Prick - cheap, mean and evil. I was a waitress at a cheap motel restaurant for two summers. I like to think it was a 'personal growth experience,' but really it was just slave labor for 5$ an hour.

I'm sorry to hear of your friend. It seems like so many of the brightest lights go out too early.

Lives lost too young are always so sad.... excellent and touching post Jay.

So did Ricky and Julian ever visit that bar? That sounds so, Trailer Parl Boys.

Also, exactly how many drunks can you shake a stick at?

That gave me shivers. In a good way and a bad way, all at the same time.

Sigh. Time is so fleeting.

What a sad story. You always manage to give me goosebumps, Miss.Jay

excellent post!

This brings back memories of my days as a bartender when I was an undergrad. Your description of the clientelle could have been mine. The end of your post is rather shocking, though.

Great story.

Great tribute to Sarah.

Keep writing. We all need it.

17 is the best. I had a great year when I was 17. I'm glad I made the most of it.

So I'm doing the BlogExplosion thing and I END UP BACK HERE!! Who would have thought.

Stunning woman... you write so well.

what an unexpected ending. such a moving piece.

Great wrting. Reminded me of my days at the bar. So sad about your friend but a tree is more than most people get.

That's so sad...I was so not ready for your death ending. Totally unexpected. I dont know why, but I thought maybe you were gonna talk about how you and Sarah went on to conquer the world and fight crime or something..like super heroes. But I guess that's life. You never know which way it's gonna lead you. It's pretty cool though that it led you to your waitressing gig and to Sarah, though.

Loved the post. Was sorry to hear about Sarah.
I had to laugh when u mentioned Ste Eustache...I live in a town only 10 mins from there..love the huge flee market there in the summers lol...

That sent a chill down me, tis so sad to lose a friend and someone so young. Does make you think about how to spend your own life at times.

You never know who you are going to miss from day to day do you? It is very sad that Sarah had to fall to her death so young. As we get older it seems we tend to think of people we have lost, and the list begis to grow. I am sorry that Sarah is gone. I am sure that you miss her.

great story. I was a waitress eons ago..we had mostly mozart nights. REALLY SUPERFICIAL WITH SNOOTY PATRONS!!

refreshingly vivid post of many canadian summers.

Boy, you are a good writer. Guess I'll have to bookmark you

I wouldn't want to be 17 again, I think.

You're right... the world is made for 17-year old girls!

Sarah's death is indeed a very sad thing. I'm sure she didn't know how true her words to you really were.

I spent a summer working at a golf course/bar... sounds kind of similar minus Elvis, glasses of bathroom water (ew) and the insane manager. As nutty as that time sounds, it certainly gives you one hell of a bizarre time to look back on!

Oh, and from the bottom of my heart, thank you for spelling it 'snifter' and not 'sniffer'.... huge pet peeve of mine...

"Trailer park drunks are not the most generous of souls, as it turns out."

brilliant.

What a great read - evoked so many memories of being waitress myself from 13 - 18.

Thank you for sharing your gift of storytelling.

Cheers
Zanna

You have a unique way with words, Jay... I'll give you that much and then note how your works leave me wondering what comes next or what twist you will add that keeps them so intriguing to the very end. Well done, as always.

Surfing through via BE and happened upon this site. This was a fantastic story to read.

That was a really great story..I am really enjoying your blog..cant wait to read some more!
