Being a Minnesota sports fan, I certainly know what it's like when your guy gets traded. I also know that your Raptors completely stomped on my Timberwolves tonight, dammit!

I can't believe Sundin is getting flak for deciding to stay. I read his statement to the press, how he doesn't believe in rental players, that winning the Cup is a journey from October to June, not a few weeks in Spring.... That's selfish? Being a team player is selfish? Showing integrity, character and loyalty is selfish?
I wish the whole team was that selfish. Maybe we wouldn't be in the League's basement.

A Hockey Post? I would never have thought it was possible.
It is indeed about the love of the game, and love of the team that you play for. It doesn't matter if home ice is the Air Canada Centre, Madison Square Gardens, the Saddle Dome, it's all about the love of the game.
Oh and GO FLAMES GO!!!

"If there's a goal that everyone remembers
It was back in old '72
We all squeezed the stick and we all pulled the trigger
And all I remember is sitting beside you.
You said you didn't give a fuck about hockey
And I never saw someone say that before
You held my hand and we walked home the long way
You were loosenin' my grip on Bobby Orr."

This reminds me of Bret Farve on The Green Bay Packers Football Team. I still have no idea if he's coming back this year. I turned the Tv off before the news came on last night. I will find out soon enough though. LOL..

You know, I really miss that overall in team sports. It's the same here in Europe with soccer.
I hope your post helps a few in Toronto realize how much a guy like that is important to a team. THEIR team.

All I could think about was that you sunk to the low of actually discussing sports and then you said something about wieners in tepid water and that really got me to thinking, then you went back to sports. And that's all that registered in my brain.
Never speak of sports again.
I beg of you.
Wieners are fine though.

Don't give any consideration to the comment just above mine. Chicks who talk about sports with ANY amount of passion are totally teh hawt. Your blonde good looks and relative lasciviousness don't hurt either, though.
In an era where hockey is perceived as much MORE a business than a sport first (and it IS a sport first), Mats' (Mats's?) dedication is to be commended. Hopefully not just by the fans, but also by those more involved in the business aspect of the game.
That said, of course I have to chime in with "Go Oilers!" (Bloody Flames fans up above, you see.)

One reason I love Hockey is that it is so passionate. It's a business, but it isn't as sullied as football with it's Tampax Bowls. And it's got way more action than Baseball. And the names of the hockey players are so much more fun to say and spell. So hearing this makes me sad.
Here's hoping Toronto wises up.

Unfortunately I don't know absolutely anything about hockey. You say it's a sport? That's the ice skater people right? Look like football players with boomerangs or something? Chasing after a microwave magnet? I Googled it.

Yeah, I know it's not like me to talk sports, but really, I think of it more as an outrage from a personal point of view. I'm not the biggest fan, and maybe it's hypocritical of me to complain, but this guy has done so much, not only for his team, but for the city, it seems a shame that we don't all throw our support behind him 100%.

Crag - yes, those sentiments have been bandied about here as well. I think he has a lot of integrity. It takes a strong man to stay, especially amid such controversy. But if he wins a cup, he wants to deserve it all the way, not come in at the last second and reap someone else's benefits.
FB, I think you lose points for calling it "ice" hockey.
K, I totally knew you would be on my case about this. I expect I'll here more about it later.

Nice blog entry. You make a great point about player dedication to their current team.
I wish the players of the Cincinnati Bengals football team were that dedicated to the team. It's seems like they only consider the Bengals as a way to get their foot in the door of professional football. Then after being drafted they play with half the effort to avoid being injured before any trade. This of course a generalization. There are a couple players that give all to the team.

I somehow missed up to this point that you are a hockey fan.
I also was surprised, however, to find that Joyce Carol Oates was a boxing fan. Or, spent a lot of time thinking (and writing) about it, anyway.
Not that those two are the same, but both are very physical and seemingly incongruous with the interests of literary women.
There I got stereotyping again.
One of my favorite English professors was a huge basketball fan. Go figure.

With the Leafs, however, the fans have become accustomed to their suckage and therefore accept mediocrity, bad plays and whatnot.
If Mats was traded to, say, Philadelphia, and he played at an average-to-below average level, ie. the "normal" level of play for the Leafs, you know he'd be booed off the ice.
I'd really, really like to believe it's for the love of the game and the love of the city, but I think there's more to it.

I admire loyalty and dedication in an athlete.
But I also recognize that to all things an end must come. And while it's tough to let beloved athletes go, sometimes it's necessary in order to bring a level of success back to an organization.
Hockey is a game, as is football or baseball. However professional sports are played for money and the money comes from winning.
Tough realities, but realities nonetheless.

I got to visit Toronto for Sars Fest back in 2003 - and I loved it. I really have to get back there.
This is why Sundin got a no trade clause in his contract. What stinks is when your own organization that you've given your blood, sweat, and tears for, asks if you wouldn't mind leaving ...
