How is advocating for peace anti-Americanism? I don't get it.
Thanks,
Accidental Reader

Gravatar I changed the title before I saw your post. So what the hell are you talking about?

(kidding).

Gravatar But to address your point, it's not advocating for peace per se that's anti-American, it's the false assumption by Kofi and everyone else who does so that it's the U.S. that stands in the way of its realization.

Oh, and Kofi is a corrupt hypocrite.

Gravatar "We're not the only people paying top dollar."

Heh.

Gravatar Kofi Annan was up to his eybrows in the oil for food scandal. They caught his son for some kind of corruption related to that--I think.

He was the boss of the UN when that horrible corruption happened and he didn't have transparency. They protected the crooks.

Some of the UN people who actually go out to those countries and help people are the salt of the earth, but I think that these big guys are huge crooks.

I think Saddam bought these big UN guys and many European politicians.

Gravatar One of the people that Ward Churchill "quotes" (maybe) in Some People Push Back is a UN official named Denis J. Halliday, who was in Charge of the Oil for Food program.

Churchill claimed:
"former U.N. Assistant Secretary General Denis Halladay, repeatedly denounced what was happening as 'a systematic program . . . of deliberate genocide.' His statements appeared in the New York Times and other papers during the fall of 1998."

Here is what Halliday says according to an interview in a 2000 book called Iraq Under Seige (South End Press---radical ):

“The struggle of activists in the US, UK, Canada, and other countries can help bring an end to what Denis Halliday rightly calls a genocide in Iraq.” (page 17)
[No cite given—in the introduction by Anthony Arnove]

“You've used the term genocide in reference to the sanctions. It's really a loaded term. Don't you feel that you're stretching the bounds by using it?”

“DH: I began to use that word recently, the first time in Paris. It was picked up by Le Monde and Reuters and others. Some feel that it is indeed the wrong word. Few are able to give me a better word.
It certainly is a valid word in my view when you have a situation where we see thousands of deaths per month, a possible total of 1 million to 1.5 million over the last nine years. If that is not genocide, then I don't know quite what is."

Soon after he quit in 1998, Halliday (not Halladay as Churchill spells it) told Congress that President Clinton should lift the sanctions on Iraq.
Reb John Conyers and some Democrats supported this but Clinton said the problems were Saddam's fault.

Here is an article about Halliday:

Later Halliday is quoted in some South End Press publications, which made me wonder if he was an honest person since he was in charge of the oil for food and then the darling of this crew:

Iraq Under Siege
The Deadly Impact of Sanctions and War

Gravatar Mr. Carroll is right but he could have gone further. I would have pointed out that his son was caught in that oil-for-food corruption.

These kind of people know how to suck money out of organizations.

This guy is probably a big thief. The oil-for food theft was huge and happened on his watch.

Gravatar As college debaters, we use to argue with Kofi for free during his years as a Macalester student in St Paul, MN. Wally Mondale preceded the great multi-nationalist at Macalester by 20+ years. Sir Walter could have been President, NOT. One hundred K - and 60 + for the Private Jet and two sluggos at the current price of jet fuel is a bargain in Kofi-land. Afterall, the price of Oil-for-Peace isn't cheap. Just ask Kofi's son.
