Good post....When I moved out to Gibbsville, after living in the big city of Sheboygan, I learned that lesson, too. Nearest gas station 6 miles away, grocery store, 8-10 miles away.
Of course, I'm not including the amenities in the Village of Oostburg (4 miles away), mostly because none of them are open on Sunday, and they usually roll up the sidewalks around 7 on weeknights!

You get used to it over time. After being here for 13 years, I tend to plan better and make a lot of lists!

Well, living in a larger city like Rhinelander does have its advantages. I also know that I have yet to finish a project that didn't take at least 4 trips to the hardware store to get something I needed (like the right size wrench, 1 more lock washer, or some goofy piece of pipe that I didn't even know existed).
No matter how carefully I plan ahead of time, something is always missing when I get in the middle of it. They always take about twice as long as planned, too.

Larry, I guess I'm just a bit spoiled. I grew up in Chippewa Falls, so if I ever needed something, I had about a 15 minute drive to Eau Claire to get it. While Eau Claire isn't huge, it is a regional retail center, so everything was convenient. I now live about 25 minutes from Janesville and 20 minutes from Watertown. It's amazing how much extra time that 5 to 10 minutes adds to a projecte when you have to run out in the middle of it.
Paul-I love Rhinelander. I haven't been there in about 11 years now, but if I ever found a job in the area, I'd have no problem living there...except when it came to my home project futility.
