Gravatar Don't forget the tariff on imported ethanol.

Gravatar 49.5 cpg when they didn't do one thing to produce that gallon of gas.

Really? Every road project paid for by that tax encourages more drivers, more cars, and more commerce--all things that gasoline makers can't live without.

Every bit of that tax that goes to transit projects helps reduce demand, keeping prices a little lower.

Interstates don't pay for themselves--even toll roads are subsidized--and neither does transit. If you can live without roads, buses, trains, airplanes, well, fine. Let's stop the tax. Everyone who can't live without those things might not be so happy with you.

Gravatar is there any tax the left cannot live with out How about this lets get rid of the empty buses and take a dime off of the Wis gas tax or maybe the 4 lane highway to Hurley

and if the state thinks they can produce gas better and cheaper than Exxon they are welcome to try and compete in the arena of the free Market.

The fact remains that 50 cents out of the $3 your paying for gas is nothing but a tax and you forgot to mention all the road funds that Diamond Jim used to balance his budget.

Gravatar Bravo, Chris. You garnered a Slate mention.

Gravatar Thanks, I hope to rock spell checker caught all my mistakes

Gravatar I wonder why it is that the government won't open up ANWR? They will surely tax the product! And they could waste a bunch of money developing cumbersome regulations. I'm surprised they haven't jumped on that. I wish they would...it'd give us some relief by increasing supply and thus decreasing prices.

Gravatar I know a lot of people like to mention that the tax on gasoline goes to maintain highways and roads. But the fact is that if this were left up to private enterprise the job would still get done.

Government doesn't have to be involved, but they are. Fine. But don't make it sound like "government" is some martyr we could not live without in this particular arena. Regulations on oil exploration & drilling, regulations on building & maintaining refineries and nuclear plants, have gone a long way towards getting us into the jam we're in now.

I wish government would get out of the way in the areas of education and healthcare. Both would benefit tremendously from free market pressures and competition that would reduce costs and raise quality.

Gravatar I'm with novacancy--let's open up ANWR, the Rockies, the Outer Continental Shelf and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

Gravatar "Don't forget all the road blocks the Federal government has put in the way of the oil industry to expand the areas where we drill for oil."

I agree with you here-- right now we are facing high gas prices because we can't satisfy the demand with enough supply. If the gov't would let oil companies get to ANWR and remove some of those barriers to expansion, we might be able to fix this problem... or at least start.
