I think that you raise a lot of good points, and your point on CAFE standards is especially important since Washington is expected to vote on them today. I agree that just “jacking up” standards is no way to go and that government forcing change is contrary to the interests of average consumers and the industry as well. My hope is that the compromise that a bipartisan group of Senators are trying to get approved will be successful because it still raises standards but at the same time is realistic. I do some work with groups like AAM who say that this amendment (the Prior-Bond one) is a good compromise and that it will do a lot to encourage new technologies as well as have a positive impact on standards. Its really important that people are vocal with their representatives on this issue now before they pass legislation that not only negatively impacts our companies but also American consumers.
