Hey, remember our little Einstein dealio?

Turns out the Guardian wrote a good little ditty about that exact phenomenon of theist/atheists trying to take the expert opinion of a popular scientist for their selves. Sheds light on his beliefs a smidge. Go forth and readith into it:

Yeah, and in the same amount of time Norbit fell only five spots. What's your point?

I did read that, yes. I loved the end paragraph:

=========================
Despite his categorical rejection of conventional religion, Brooke said that Einstein became angry when his views were appropriated by evangelists for atheism. He was offended by their lack of humility and once wrote. "The eternal mystery of the world is its comprehensibility."
=========================

I think it's pretty clear which side of the ID debate Einstein would come down on.

It's obviously over your head. My point was very straightforward and clear. Go back and re-read the post.

The popularity of a film does not have any bearing on it's accuracy or quality.

So we see that you can quote the article about the letter. How about a quote from the letter itself?

"The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this."

In what way does this indicate that he believes in a creator god? He obviously has a vastly different definition of the word "God" than the Creationists and IDers do.

Even though I agree with this statement, what Einstein would have thought about ID/Creationism doesn't matter. "Argumentum ad Einsteinium" is still an argument from authority, which is fallacious. Both sides would do well to remember this.

*guffaw*

Irony.

Thanks, Starbix. I completely agree, though I'm sure not with the same conclusion you are drawing.

It says to me, along with his other statements mentioning God, is that he felt the word and idea was not sufficient to describe God.

Contrary to what skeptics would like, even in light of this letter, Einstein would most certainly never, ever come down on the side of atheists.

Isn't "argumentum ad Einsteinium" an argument from the periodic table?

Anyway...

The point is that for years, the anti-God crowd has tried to usurp Einstein for their purposes when the fact of the matter is that he would be insulted by such a thing. I'm not trying to usurp Einstein for anything. I'm just drawing a reasonable, logical conclusion with his own words.

And actually, an argument from authority would involve arguing for the veracity of ID based upon Einstein's statements, which I'm not doing. I'm simply stating on which side of the debate Einstein would most likely fall.
