Gravatar One wonders if the mother also objects to the images of a brutally tortured dead man hanging on a cross that are presumably mounted on the wall in each of her daughter's school's classrooms.

Gravatar From the CDC's abortion surveillance report:

Public Health Action: Abortion surveillance in the United States continues to provide the data necessary for examining trends in numbers and characteristics of women who obtain legal induced abortions and to increase understanding of this pregnancy outcome. Policymakers and program planners use these data to improve the health and well-being of women and infants.

Huh? WTF? Somebody translate what the heck this idiotic statement is supposed to mean!

Gravatar Well, I believe that access to contraception dramatically lowered my own abortion rate to zero.

Some parents get upset about everything -- I could understand it better if the abortion video had been shown to young elementary school kids, but her daughter was 15. That`s exactly the age when kids SHOULD be shown gory abortion videos, along with the gory drunken car crash videos in drivers ed.

Gravatar L.,
I'd never claim access to contraception doesn't prevent some women from being pregnant. The myth that more contraceptives will magically solve (or dramatically reduce) the abortion problem in the U.S. is what I'm referring to.

Gravatar Jivin,

What do you think about this? According to the CDC report the abortion rate today is nearly identical to what it was in 1973 (16 p/1000 women in 2003 vs. 14 p/1000 women in 1973), while the abortion ratio is approximately 25% higher today than it was in 1973 (241 abortions p/1000 live births in 2003 vs. 196 abortions p/1000 live births in 1973). Why is today's abortion rate commensurate to the abortion rate in 1973, while today's abortion ratio is disproportionate to the abortion ratio in 1973? Here's my take on it. Tell me if I'm thinking about this correctly.

It seems the reason today's abortion rate is commensurate to the abortion rate in 1973, while today's abortion ratio is disproportionate to the abortion ratio in 1973 is because women are bearing fewer children today than they were in 1973. While the number of abortions per 1000 women is about the same (rate), the number of live births has dropped, creating the disproportionality between the 1973 and 2003 abortion ratios. Yes?
