Hearing the terror and confusion, uninterrupted by newscasters, really drives home how tragic this was. I couldn't tell what much of what the guy videotaping this was saying, but the tone in his voice and the way he was talking showed his confusion and disbelief at this. I'm glad he had the ability to shoot video and decipher the situation enough to stay alive.
I think one of the eerie aspects of this and another video I saw was the terrifying screams and then a few moments later, silence. People had either drowned or been swept away. Wow.
I don't see how the two men who were swept away could have survived. I still have tears in my eyes from seeing that.
I hate cnn, and those other cable networks. They have this footage, but show only 3 seconds of it - because they get excited, and just have to talk, and show their face and logo 24 hrs/day.

What is really twisted here is that as the waves approach the spectators are excited and filled with awe,in some videos the people are even laughing, not noticing the imminent destruction they would cause.

Although things in Europe tend to happen slowly, at least (generally) we don't just go to war with random countries in a vain attempt to save the Bushes asses. And to single out the US when according to those charts we are the highest paying (non-requirement meeting) Country is ludicris. We support alot of the world, we lead in most every aid needed. We make more GNP than other nations, this is what allows us to spend more on aid while not taxing our citezens and companies to death. Capitalism works people. But Scandinavian countries are probably the best organized and wealthiest countries in the world (check the stats everywhere), and they do meet the requirements. Moreover, one should aid people the way one cán aid. Therefore I think you really should look at percentages, not gross amount. Where not only America is lacking, by the way...
Anyway, lets hope this 3rd-world-aid-thing will be a non-issue in the future..

As the magnitude of this disaster is better understood, watch for more funding. I would like to think more aid will be forthcoming from a vacationing president who spends one billion dollars a week on a war that many people in the US do not understand. This event really isn't a third world country issue, but a world issue as seen by the many foreign casualties and amount of destruction.
It is also wrong to rely soley on government assistance for this kind of tragedy. It is up to us as human beings to pick up the slack if we think enough isn't being done. Thankfully, many orginazations are collecting private donations. amazon.com is an easy way to donate to Red Cross.

think again - for all you criticizing the USA's contribution to world aid due to its low ratio of assistance:GNP, just remember that this only reflects government contributions. with lower tax rates than most of europe a higher proportion of US GNP remains in the hands of private citizens. the charity of americans is not included but bineg a NYer i can assure you many individuals contribute to this and other worldly events out of their own pockets. with many wealthy americans donating generous amounts to many causes -not to mention the super wealthy (look at what bill gates contributes to world causes) - you are wrong to incorrectly labeling us as you have.

These movies would be ideal for the bittorrent environment. Hosting a torrent file instead of the actual movies themselves, I'm sure you could cut your personal bandwidth usage from 10TB/day to more like 1GB/day. Why don't you go that route? That way more of us could see them.

You have to install the torrent app first,then click the torrent link/file,but it seems to be down right now for some reason.

But more importantly, the PEOPLE of the United States are donating millions upon millions. See, that's the way it's supposed to work. The people are supposed to give, not the government.
I find it somewhat ironic that the people of the United States - you know, a bunch of bigots who hate all religions beside Christianity and Judaism – never hesitate to help anybody in need. This disaster is certainly a horrible way to ring in the new year. I didn't donate anything at first and then I watched a couple of these videos. This is such a bad situation. I can only imagine how much money would be donated from private donors if we only had the news coverage of this event. It seems like they cannot show more then 10 seconds of a video at a time.
I think some of the comments from the UN are pathetic but what can you expect: during times of crises we don't get involved enough and when we are trying to prevent man made disasters like this (i.e. 9/11) they think we are violating international law. I blame the governments of these nations for not developing a warning system. That is their job not the USA's.

This one is not really the worst one I've seen. Its an image which I personally think everyone should see (especially the wackos and nutjobs out there who think it is more important to argue about who donated the most or who offered relief the fastest). At first glance, it looks like a huge pile of debris and rubble in what is a canal or river. When you look closer though, you'll see that some of that rubble are actually bodies; lots of them. From a distance, you really would not be able to tell if they were bodies since everything is just dark and black from the dirt and mud.
This shows just a tiny slice of the sort of carnage that a tsunami can do and how it does not discriminate against race, color, or nationality. This also shows how difficult and gruesome a job the cleanup effort will be. It boggles the mind that in some areas, this same scene repeats itself but with everything
(continued since it got cut off)
buried beneath a layer of sand and mud.
Finally, this also shows how insignificant we really are when mother nature decides to let out a burp. We can't control what nature does but if there had been a warning system and procedures in place, the number of casualties might have likely been reduced especially for those furthest from the epicenter since they would have had the time to get uphill or move inland into a safe zone. Hopefully this disaster will spark public awareness about tsunamis and what they actually are since even with these raw video footage and coverage, you still come across many who don't understand the magnitude and power of those waves and water. All of these sites posting up these videos should also include a link to the Tsunami Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsunami and encouraging visitors to read exactly what how a seismically generated wave differs from wind/storm generated ones.

Re: Amazon fee - isn’t this the VISA/MC/Amex rate that they charge? So if I donate $100 and pay by credit card Amazon doesn’t get the full amount, but about $97. If Amazon is adding this fee on top of the credit card fee percentage then this is an outrage.

I had the same concern though on a broader scale - are all credit card donations subject to the standard 3% transaction fee? Eh, a major chill-pill there, buddy. There is no such thing as "leeching" a torrent and then bugging out before "contributing your fair share", since the entire premise of torrents is that the any of the hundreds of tiny chunks you've downloaded so far are immediatedly available for anyone else who needs them.
You'll notice (in the BitTorrent client) that it's impossible to have greater DL than UL unless virtually all the other node parties are already at 100% file-completion.

I've been looking all over for some of the initial footage of the very powerful waves which struck Columbo (the one in which dozens of vehicles and buses are seen floating and sinking with people still in them, with two men climbing off one just as it sinks), and another scene showing a monstrous wall of water coming up the street in the background of an otherwise ordinary city scene. In particular, I'm trying to find the "many buses" sequence UN-EDITED.
The video footage from the various tourist hotels is really quite tame in comparison...but that seems to be all that's out there to download.

20,000 sets of boots on the ground actually providing help to the people, and protecting them.
An entire battle group providing support with fresh water tankers, floating hospitals, aircraft carriers, planes, helicopters, etc.
All of that on top of the cash.
Not to mention what our citizens are giving.
Most other countries are just promising money to make headlines, and sitting back to let the US do the real work.
You should all be ashamed.
Sorry to ‘disappoint’ some of you about the supposedly generous US-citizens and ‘stingy’ EU-citizens. I'm afraid your newsorganisations are giving you false impressions about *private* donations (plus actual reliefsupport) from EU-citizens.
"U.S. charities have reported raising more than $337 million so far" (Washingpost). Dutch charities have raised more than €112 million so far ... ($150 million? www.giro555.nl). The US have got 293 million inhabitants, the Netherlands 16 million (with give or take 40% incometaxe). Just compare those figures.
