Gravatar CNE and the tree was too funny! : )

Gravatar I could probably save money on things I'm dead-certain I'm going to buy anyway (appliances, sheets, soap, lightbulbs...) by shoppping at Wal-Mart. But I won't.
I've never been in a Wal-Mart, other than to peek inside (with firm resolve not to go all the way in).
But, yeah, I understand that you live in a high-unemployment area. And that you, personally, cannot keep the store from setting up shop.
However, the employees of Wal-Mart will be existing on welfare because their wages will be too low and they won't be able to afford the health plan they have to PAY FOR so they'll be using "free" emergency room services at your local medical facilities... And they might even qualify for food stamps. And you'll end up subsidizing them.
I don't know what to suggest. But I would not shop there. That doesn't mean other people won't. So I'm powerless.
(BTW: In a Southern California community, Wal-Mart was denied permission to build -- by voters! Woo-hoo.)
Glad you're feeling better.

Gravatar Farmgirl - The ladder is still out there. We think there may be a sequel.

cc- I agree with you completely. I avoid shopping at Wal-Mart. Every dollar spent there is a vote for the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. But I suspect a lot of unemployed people here will prefer not to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Gravatar Surreptitious photos?

Gravatar I'm thinking CNE may have some kin up here...

There's a big stink about Wal-Mart building ANOTHER super store in Asheville. You didn't even mention the huge tax breaks and incentives they get from the county, city , state, etc. to build.

While we were in Maryland last week the MD legislature apparently passed a bill requiring employers with over a certain amount of employees in the state to use a percent (I can't remember if it was 6 or 12) of it's revenue to provide health care to workers. The only company big enough to be affected in the state was Wal-Mart, thus it was called the Wal-Mart Bill. The governor vetoed it. (Guess which party he belongs to???!!!) And then the legislature overrode the veto. I got to hear all about it while hanging out with my cousins in Annapolis.

Gravatar Greavsie - CNE already dislikes us*, so I don't think I can risk it. Trust me, I would love to!

* Because his dog bit me when it was running loose, and because we won't let him burn things on our property. Yeah, I know. It makes perfect sense to me, too.

Maggie - Yes! Grrr. The money the government will have to spend on new road infrastructure, tax breaks, etc., is money that won't be spent helping people who really need it. :-(

Are there other Wal-Mart Bills and/or lawsuits in progress? I remember reading something, but I don't know if it was the MD thing you mentioned.

Gravatar I hate Wal-Mart for all the usual reasons, too. Goody about the Home Depot, though. Sounds like CNE stole that one from Wyle E Coyote. Is act II the one where he saws off the branch he is sitting at the end of? Any cliffs near by? Anvils? Does his ladder bear the Acme brand name?

Gravatar I'm with most of the other commenters on Wal-Mart. Hubby and I have avoided it for several years and I'll never set foot in one again. The money saved by shopping there is not worth the societal ills and tax dollars that will need to be levied and spent to build the store and then take care of the employees through food stamps and medicare that Wal-Mart won't. I won't rehash everything that's already been said but if you want to watch an excellent documentary on the issue check out http://www.walmartmovie.com/

Hubby and I just watched it and highly recommend it.

Gravatar CNE has a dog that bites? He definately is related to the folks down the hill... Are there confederate flags involved?

Gravatar Walmart is SOOOOOOOO evil.

I know this because, at one point, I was desperate enough to allow myself to be employed by them. And I was royally screwed over left and right.

Funny thing about it was I didn't make enough to get their insurance, and when I applied for medicaid owing to same, the govn't said I made too much and gave me food stamps instead(!).

Which resulted in my spending 2 days a month, 7 hours a day, to be seen by the clinic in Cook County hospital just to get my tegretol jones. 7 hours to be seen, then 7 hours the next day to get the damned pills.

Evil, I tell you. EVILLLLL!!

Gravatar And, given that I'm quite pro-union and was raised as such, I felt like Benedict Arnold.

Thank god I got out of that joint!!

Gravatar Jamie-
PLEASE call us next time there is a promising CNE spectacle. It only takes me 30 or 40 minutes to get there, and I would hate to miss him falling out of a tree and onto his chainsaw.
Ruggybabs- did not know there was a fellow Chicagoan here. Sweet! Though I am an Athenian now.
And regarding Home Depot, they aren't really "fine"--that guy is a major contributor to the Republican party--but what else are we going to do? Is Lowe's any better? Does anybody know? Just curious. And damn if they aren't just a minute away from us. I hope this doesn't mean that I will see less of you.

Gravatar Well I was only there for two years, in all honesty, Julie, but I may go back yet

Gravatar Home Depot is just as evil, but no one believes me. My husband is a builder, and he says the staff there has 1/10th the competence of our local lumber yard or OSH (Orchard Supply Hardware). We have been battling against a Home Depot a couple of blocks from my house here in Santa Cruz County. They want to put it on the busiest street, at the busiest intersection in the entire county.

I could scream, but I need to save my energy for other things.

I feel your pain, honey.

Gravatar *sigh* Well, dang.

But is Lowe's any better? Anyone, anyone?

P.S. Diana, you cracked us up with your Wile E. Coyote comment.

P.P.S. Julie, I will try to visit you MORE, if anything.

Gravatar Late to the table. I don't know how I missed reading this post, but I did.

Very entertaining description of CNE. A camera should be trained on his property at all times.

Agreed. Walmart and Home Depot are evil. I boycott both.
