Gravatar Beautiful radishes, Jamie. Very cool. Have we seen pictures of your greenhouse? I can't remember.

Loved the photo of the kale too - I think that kale is my favorite winter veg. And it's so cool looking.

Gravatar Thank you, Jen.

I put a photo of the greenhouse up a while ago...lemme see...ah! It's at the very top of the November archive page.

Gravatar So pretty.
Jealous! I could be growing my own, but the seed packet we bought (at the drugstore; my own dumb fault) only produced radish-colored matchsticks. So we grew teensy radish sprouts instead, harvested them as soon as they popped up, and ate them on salads.
I'll try again.
PS: Do you butter your radishes? Grate some and mix with butter and salt, and spread on rustic brown bread.

Gravatar cc, believe it or not, the most consistent results I've gotten with radishes have come from "Cherry Belle" radish seeds I got at the dollar store! But radishes are picky. Some times of the year they are perfect, and other times they refuse to bulb out and/or rot in the ground.

Luckily, they only take 22 days to mature, so you can keep trying different times until you hit it just right.

Gravatar Oh, and I forgot to answer the buttering question. Yes, I've done that and it's awesome. But the radishes in today's pic ended up in a salad with baby greens and red navel oranges (my new favorite ingredient).

Gravatar They are beautiful little rubies, aren't they? I just wish I liked that peppery taste.

Gravatar Holy samosa: Radishes and oranges. Mm.
Jamie, you are so smart. Thanks for the radish agrarian advice.
I think this *is* the time of year to replant.
xx

Gravatar I bet I could get some radishes to grow in Kansas right now with all the warm'ish weather we've been having! I could definitely figure out some kind of mini-greenhouse. 22 days! Hmm!!

Gravatar Ah, the noble radish... I am quite jealous of your greenhouse and earlier planting times. I could probably rig up something though. A cold frame and (if the budget allows) a small greenhouse are in the master plan for this year.

Cherry Belle works great for us too. My favorite though is french breakfast. I'm branching out with a few more varieties this year.

Gravatar My fave is French Breakfast, too. Yesterday I was watching a Jamie Oliver program and he chopped, like, a million FBs into a potato salad. Looked like a good idea to me!

Gravatar It seems so strange to think of you watching Jamie Oliver in the States. Don't quite know why - it just seems funny. Nice radishes by the way.

Oh, and erm, Jamie - checked yer email lately?

Gravatar They look lovely
But sorry, I just don't like them!

Gravatar Don't feel bad, Tana and Anx.

Not everyone likes them. They are indeed very peppery/turnipy and very much an acquired taste. You can just look at them!
