I'm certainly no expert on the ins and outs of "open-source" models in the grand scheme of things, but I do know this: If it weren't for "Girl" Mark Alovert's open source Appleseed invention and the subsequent improvements on it in forums, email lists, and from Mark herself, I wouldn't have 50 gallons of biodiesel sitting in my garage right now. And there a lot of veggie fuel makers in the same boat as me. And I think that's a good thing.
Whether that can translate into a productive model of global development and progress, I don't know. But I hope it can.
And by the way Jeff, feel free to use my Appleseed pictures next time.

Of course this is a great idea. I know because we've been doing it. Our organization called the Full Belly Project (see link) has been producing open source technology that has the potential to feed, literally billions of people. We developed a machine called the Malian Peanut Sheller that has the potential to dramatically increase yields for the 1/2 billion people on the planet that rely on peanuts as a primary source of protein. Once you have the concrete molds for the machine ($500) each subsequent machine is only $70 worth of concrete and metal parts. But we want to bring down the cost further. We're activly looking for other individuals who would like to particpate in a sort of network to develop this technology and take it into the field where it can be used. If you can help us do so go to our discussion forums at: http://s3.phpbbforfree.com/
