knee-jerk politics...

Gravatar Yeah... I think ultimately that's all it will be, at least if gas prices stabilize... we can dream, though...

Gravatar Hi,

I am very interested in the issue of alternate fuels and find it inevitable that the US is experienceing difficulties on the matter, with much worse to come. Unless a shift is made towards alternate fuels. But to be realistic, I find it the unfortunate truth that americans will take a long long time to adhere to alternate fuels like electrity and bio-ethanol (eventhough the US, alongside Brazil, is a major producer of bio-ethanol). There are however other alternate fuels that can provide amazing improvements in lowering emissions. For example GTL diesel, which of course is still diesel and doesn't have the same economic impact as bio-ethanol would. However bio-ethanol at the moment still requires engine conversions, as is the law in my home country (Brazil - to have bio-ethanol/petrol engines). So in terms of an emmediate impact in the environment, GTL diesel is a more realistic alternative. The cost of petrol and will continue to be at a high, but if we are going to use it, why not use the cleaner alternatives.
If you are interested on the topic, please visit my blog, and let me know if you want to exchange links. As I work for a PR company (Fleishmann Hillard) and am working on the campaign for GTL "cleaner" diesel, I have access to a great deal of information regarding alternate fuels that I will be happy to share with you. If you are interested in the environment, again I urge you to visit my blog.
Thanks and congratulations for the insightful and well built blog.

Gravatar Please tell me that this is a joke? Hillary Clinton needs to really reassess the situation and realize that these are not the days to say that we need to conserve a little. What is this about 2.5 million barrels less by 2016! They should have said, 2007! No one reading these thinks it's impossible. The 10 million barrels less ought to be 2009. These are realistic goals for companies to meet. 2031 is a slap in the face, and I wish it were Hillary being slapped for being stupid enough to suggest such lame terms.

Gravatar Andre-- I've heard from one of your colleagues also on this subject -- I would like to learn more, and plan to post about the big Chevron event in Africa... I'll definitely dig into your blog.

Gravatar I'm not sure if I read that one part right, but it made me think of something. How about we exempt cars that run on E85 only from CAFE? That way, you can have your huge 8 cylinder SUV, but you'll have to fill it with ethanol or biodiesel.

Gravatar That's an interesting idea, RH, and may work in the short term, but should people continue to purchase big cars at the rate they have in the past 10 years or so, I'm not sure we can produce enough biofuels to keep up.

Gravatar Hey-up Doc...this fuel business is ruining the flavour of my meagre supply of weal cawwots...the answer in the short term is very simple...first we have to mind-burn the auto mfg people into making/supplying more economical consuming engines with more filtration of the dirty end product...then we get quantum mechanics to explain the future of using vehicles with 100mpg against resources to profit ratio and less CO2 in the atmosphere...this also applies to aviation...we then do great flanker on the public by means of the famous PR companies who send the message that "its great to take a little longer and minimize air pollution" after all who really needs to get there ten minutes earlier when no-one is waiting for you and the baggage belt is still being used by an even earlier flight that was characteristically delayed.(speed also kills timetables) Thus we have a world where the people get to drive their favourite cars, albeit a little more slowly and at great economy, thus save and sustainably utilising exsisting crude supplies over a longer period which will help reduce the nasty stuff cuasing ozone depletion in world, which helps bunnies and other solid creatures...pause for breath here...vacations get better cos everyone got to see something from their seat window and leg room gets improved so it becomes fun to fly...thus less aerial pollution in a forseeable increment in flying...and this is only in the short term...who knows we may even get back to a clean world when all the human vultures and jackasses have become an endangered species or simply died off as a result of reason and equilibrium (also old age and illness caused by organchlorides - carcinogens etc from a less conscientious time) My look at the time...I'm late for an important date...have to see my cawwot shrink...
