I was just wondering how solar and wind ever came to be classified as renewable energies. The inference of the term "renewable energy" is that the source of said energy can be renewed by some action(s) initiated by its user. Mankind has no part in creating or sustaining either the sun or the wind. If the sun were to go super nova and/or white dwarf, we could do nothing to prevent it or return it to its current state. If the wind suddenly ceased, there is no mechanism by which we could renew the breeze. I know that I am speaking semantically, but calling them renewable is technically a misnomer.

Wha he say? They "renew". That is to say, they re-appear as if by majic. Far as I am concerned renew is as good a term as any.

I think it is a fine term. It is the energy itself that is renewed, not the wind or the sunlight. I am also glad that Texas is doing its part to make up for all the extended-cab trucks they're all driving down here. Though it is not uncommon to see Houston Mayor Bill White tooling around town in his Prius chewing on his cigars.
Today global warming news is very danger news for earth life. Now this global warming issues takes big picture for this world. Now we are aware about this issue.
There are some who believe that oil and natural gas self-regenerate due to a deep-earth carbon/hydrogen reaction. This has been evidenced in cases where once "dry" wells started producing again "as if by majic". If the earth is refilling its oil reserves to any degree, are they truly fossil fuels or can we apply the term renewables to them? If traditional fuels are truly renewable, why do we throw around the term "peak oil"?

Wow, thank you so much for this wonderful posting. I couldn't agree with your sentiments more. Actually, I encourage you and anyone else to go to http://www.energybill2007.org and sign the petition to make sure that the 15% renewable energy standard by 2020 makes it into the bill, as well as the 35 mpg standard by 2020. It is the first such forward thinking bill ever considered by Congress. I think its a bit more important than arguing the merits of the word renewable.

While many businesses have realized there is a financial benefit to moving towards sustainability, there are plenty more that are making little or no effort. We must understand that businesses of all shapes and sizes, from Fortune 500 firms to independently owned small businesses are in business to make money and, therefore, environmental solutions must also be fiscally responsible. All of us need to continue searching for "common sense" ways to motivate companies and the general public to see the value of being environmentally friendly and sustainable.
More people should learn about this. EV technology is really becoming impressive, like the new Zap that does 0-60mph in 4.8 seconds. Electric is looking more and more like the way to go.
All of the posts are very interesting. However, I tend to stay away from those words "global warming". It's too political and when it's all said and done, people argue over it rather than looking for common sense solutions. In this case arguing over a politically charged and sensitive issue is a no win situation for us all.
